    (small) essentials rules change

Just to be clear, you do have to be trained in order to Detect Magic according to Heroes of the Fallen Lands. However, they also changed "Sense the Presence of Magic" from 1 minute in the PHB to a standard action in HotFL.

Can a PC use a power during ritual?

Like ardoughter, I also use the house rule that it takes one minor action per round to continue to cast the ritual.

    Essentials Game Day recap

I DMed it and had almost the exact same situation as Festivus! Nearly killed the party twice, had multiple characters down several times, but in the end they destroyed the dragon and won the day! Everyone seemed to have a good time.

Use New monster format for Character builder output

Actually, I made a character sheet in the style of the old Basic game and used it when running a retro 4e game (X1 The Isle of Dread) at a con a few months ago. I have the powers listed similarly to the change in format used for monsters starting in MM3. If you want to check it out, you can...

    Red Box Competition

Same as Merric and Festivus -- started playing in 1979 with the first Basic set.

D&D "Red Box" Game Day this Saturday (11th September)

I'm taking a road trip out to NJ to run it at Gamer's Gambit right smack in the middle of GambitCon 5 (2 pm on Saturday)! And the Pasadena D&D meetup is fantastic! That's where I played before moving back to NYC. I recommend it to anyone in the area!

Some Improvements for the Red Box!

I'd like to see: 5) A table of contents for the DM's book so that during play you can quickly look something up if you need to rather than flip through to find it.

My FLGS sold me the Red Box early.

Got mine at the Compleat Strategist in NYC this morning. I asked about HEROES OF THE FALLEN LANDS and the RULES COMPENDIUM and they said they'd have them for sale on September 10th.

D&D 4E Old School 4E Character Sheet (Goldenrod) - Now with Power Cards.

The character sheet looks great! If you want, you can remove the "Daily Item Powers Per Day" section since WoTC just dropped that rule. Keep up the awesome work, Melkor! Can't wait to see the power cards!

Do Premier Stores (U.S.) have Dark Sun Yet?

Yeah, I went to the Compleat Strategist today, too, and they had all the new books for this month. Picked up Dark Sun. IT. IS. AWESOME!!!

What do you think is wrong with rituals?

We've been using the following house rule for pre-casting rituals with great success: After spending the necessary time and components to cast a ritual, the caster may choose to delay the onset of the ritual’s effect. Before the end of your next extended rest, the ritual’s effect can be...

How Are your Books Holding Up?

Here's a photo of the Martial Power book. You can see the stitching clearly exposed (actually, this is taken with an iPhone, so it might not be *that* clear). Having worked in publishing for ten years, this doesn't seem normal to me. It worries me that pages will eventually start to fall out...

How Are your Books Holding Up?

No problems with the core books, but I've had binding problems (the glue peeling away) on three other books: Adventurer's Vault and 2 Martial Powers (one for myself, the other I bought as a gift). And that's not from use -- all three came that way. I'm trying to deal with WoTC customer service...

    Mac or PC?

Out of 9 players (between 2 groups), we have 3 people on PCs and 6 on Macs.

    I think we're done with 4E

I agree about the grindiness of combat, which to me stems from the large hit point values for monsters. For the past six months I've been running combats with monsters starting at half hit points (their bloodied value becomes half of that number). To balance out that decrease I give monsters a...

No cost to Knock Creatures Unconscious?!

You could also apply to monsters the PC death rule (also from page 295 of the PHB: "Death: When you take damage that reduces your current hit points to your bloodied value expressed as a negative number, your character dies." That might cause some monsters to die, especially if they only had...

Is the economic crisis affecting your gaming purchasing?

I'm purchasing fewer books (which, trust me, my wife is happy about since we live in a studio apartment), but the biggest change has been in my convention attendance, which tends to run several hundred dollars per weekend when you include both travel and hotel. I've had to skip two cons in the...
