    Waraxe vs Bastard Sword

Rather than Jagged, I'd go with a lv 12 +3 Vicious Waraxe (with Deadly Axe Feat), weapon damage is d12 + 2d12 (Paragon High Crit) + 3d12 (+3 Vicious) = 6d12 with an At-Will on a Crit...I do see the desire to Crit on the 19-20 as its all the bonus Crit dmg that matter, so crit'ng more often even...

another take on the Dark Sun world

As I was waiting for Darksun last year, I created my own world Durthas (Dune + Dereth + Athas). It was a post apocalyptic Ebberron campaign, where "the spice" was the inherent source of all power on the world. I was before PHB3 was introduced, so no psionics were on the world. Its sounds a...

    Game Economy

Too many good replies to quote anyone, thanks all... In the past my reason for redoing the entire game economy was that my characters were setting up a magic shop or their unused items, so I needed to calculate how many customers would come in able to buy their items. I worked out a very...

    Time per round?

Nice incentive, I've done most the other rewards on the page, just not the Combat tokens...seems like a nice way to communicate the message. Do you typically allow the token to be used post-roll, or do they cash them in before they roll? It seems with the black tokens the upgrade would occur...

    Time per round?

I swear getting combat to end in a reasonable amount of time is very hard with my group. Typically I have 5 players, and previous campaigns of levels 5 to 8 battles go for about 6 to 8 rounds, where first rounds take 2 to 4 minutes a player (about 15 min/round)...then speed up to maybe 10 min a...

    The weekly DM process

I use Monster stat block cards for initiative tracking, which works great for prep, because after DM'ing 4e for over 2 years I've a stack of cards about 6 inches high, but I can typically not bother with the stat block in the modules, even better when I'm making my own encounters. 4e has also...

Fireball still sucks, here's my fix

I agree that fireball is Iconic, but I just think 4e is more balanced than previous additions, and arbitrarily increasing one power because of its name seems a bit unfair. I do like Lord Xtheth's ideas where if the Wizards wants to they can sacrifice other Feats to increase its power. I don't...

    D&D 4E Darksun (4e Hardcore Mode)

On the contrary, defining a short-rest as 6 hours in actually speeds up the game. After each combat using the 4e rules as defined, a short-rest is taken after every combat, and people converse over who has something that can give them bonuses to their healing to maximize it. Plus, everyone is...

Dark Sun Creature Catalog: Damage Inflation

For the longest time I've thought the higher level creatures needed a damage modifier. I typically give them a x2 on the adjust for level 6 to 10, and on 11 to 20 almost all of them get a x2 on the dice. This goes along with a HP mod, as I think combats should be faster to resolve, but deadly...

    iCards - Initiative Cards

I use Monster Generator to create stat cards for monsters, combined with the Character cards from the character generator for the players to track initiative. It works the same as the cards you have above, just a bit faster for those that have access to DDI apps. Some monsters don't lend...

    Power Pools/Points?

retro fitting power points to every class is no small feat, essentially all encounter powers would need an At-Will equivalent, as well as a half point. Before PHB3 came out I was looking at a Mana based system, but I settled on the term Stamina base, since it fit all classes better...

    Game Economy

In previous versions it seemed like the town Alchemist/Magic Shop owner would quickly amass more gold than the entire town combined, 4e doesn't seem very different, but at least previous additions forced characters to pay for training an such, 4e has no major gp expense for players. I've fixed...

    Game Economy

Just wondering if this bothers anyone else... I guess I assume that the D&D economy functions similar to the feudal system of Europe, with a middle class of artisans...This seems to work well until you throw magic items into the game...it's apparent in any online game once you get past a given...

    D&D 4E Darksun (4e Hardcore Mode)

I've done similar things before creating the Hardcore framework. Being a player in Revenge of the Giants really annoyed me when the module essentially randomized the results of an extended rest on the Frost Giant leg of the journey...I think the real annoyance was the fact that I have resist 10...

    D&D 4E Darksun (4e Hardcore Mode)

Nothing, it was just a good time to change things, new campaign...new rules. With the Hardcore rules I step-up, DM's can still run the 3 to 5 encounter delve, by using a Milestone awards and another mechanism I call a Rally Surge. The scenario I was trying to "fix" was to be able to run a...

    New Creature Type, the Squad

Open Grave is one of the few 4e books I don't own...Maybe I'll have to pick this up, beside who doesn't need more types of undead to fight. Thanks

    D&D 4E Darksun (4e Hardcore Mode)

I only allow Healing surges to be spent at the rate of one per hour as well...I do allow surges to be spent getting back Encounter Powers, but they know that means less heal. As a bonus however I award a Healing surge in place of an Action Token, if they chose.

    Tougher minions

I've tried the "Elite" minion, creating one, two and even three hit minions (where every x damage counted as a hit...x = 5 for small creatures, 10 for medium and 15 for large)..."X" increases by 1 per level. Damage done that was less than the "X" rounds up to the X. example, fighting a "2 hit"...

    New Creature Type, the Squad

I like minions, but sometimes you just want to have large battles out there...and if you put over 10 creatures on the map everyone thinks "Minions"...but even Minions need separate attacks to resolve them, and when they are packed into close quarters players begin to meta game. I found a good...

    D&D 4E Darksun (4e Hardcore Mode)

Not sure how many of you feel the way I do, but to me it seems like WofC messed up when they defined a short rest to be 5 min and a extended rest to be a day. With characters always returning to full strength, outside Diseases and Curses, after a full rest. Now, I've played 4e from a...
