"Just House Rule It" and the New DM

QFT. 4E seems pretty awesome, and the response of a pro-4E person to a small tiny objection causing hissy fits is "change it if you don't like it". It's not a problem for New DMs because the system will be fine for them at first. Once they learn it, they'll develop their own personal tastes...

    Houserule: Non Adventuring Skills

Another option - "You want to make a superlative meal for the faerie lord? Roll 1d20 + Wis, DC 15" - if the player has actually roleplayed being a good cook in previous non-stressful situations, give them a +2 or +5. That's the sort of thing you just roll on the fly.

D&D 3E/3.5 What do 3ed books tell us about 4thed?

It's interesting that Bo9S didn't rate very well, especially since it and Saga Edition are the 2 big "3.75"-ish books. I'm curious about something though - most of the flamewars about Bo9S that I saw were because people didn't like the wuxia flavor of it. I can't judge why people disliked it...

*Achieves level 11, slides on "Ring of Ignore Derren"* Aaaahhh, blessed relief.

    D&D 4E 4E: DM-proofing the game

How many "horrible DM stories" have we all heard around the internet? A little DM-proofing seems like a good thing to me. Good DMs can and will house-rule around anything that gets in the way, while bad/rookie DMs will have a structure that pushes them towards being good DMs. All to the good, it...

    Abstract HP

I think some people are confused here because they assume that "healing" from a cleric is automatically knitting wounds closed etc. Why can't "divine healing" be doing the same thing the Warlord is doing - rebuilding your resolve and strength to fight. A pretty good example of this is Harry...

    Dragonborn: Boobs or No Boobs?

Hey Dausuul, say it ain't so - as one of your long-time players, the one thing I want to play in 4E is a Dragonborn Paladin (or Warlord, depending on the crunch), with that whole "honor-bound race of wandering mercenaries" flavor. Specifically, I want to look like that one Dragonborn in red full...

    R&C: Halflings...

Yes, but the rules allow you to have a level 1 Str 16 Halfling fighter - and at that point, the physics do begin to strain belief. 3' halflings worked when you didn't allow them to be anything but rogues, but if you allow them freedom, it does seem odd.

CoDzilla? Someone needs to explain this to me.

Blackrat - it has nothing to do with 4E, nor it is a monster. It's a term from the Character Optimization boards on the Wizards site, with the implication that Cleric and Druid are tremendously over-powered and broken.

    For the first time... apprehension

Just a quick note - I don't have a copy of Races and Classes yet, but from what I've heard, neither Tieflings nor Dragonborn are the result of someone's grandfather sleeping with fiends or dragons - they're both true breeding races. They sound like their fluff has been significantly changed from 3.x

    Races and Classes--I has it!

Curses. Probably going to have to wait until Tuesday then (traditional new book/music retail release date in the US). Thanks for all the good info though.

    Races and Classes--I has it!

Awesome stuff, guys. Can I ask where you found the copies? I've been circling through my local FLGSs and Borders since Tuesday, and I haven't sniffed a peek yet.

new playtest report by Steve Winter

Big Picture: The main thing to remember is that HP are not ****ing body parts. Most of the time in the fight, your armor is taking the brunt of a blow, it's a flesh wound, etc, etc, etc. -1 to -9, even in 3E is just "unconscious". If you want any kind of suspension of disbelief, you've been...

new playtest report by Steve Winter

The Warlord and the Cleric are both leaders. Their job is to keep the party on their feet and make them fight better. Of course the Warlord can revive people.

D&D 4E Rich Baker on 4e Realms changes

Well, I've never been interested in the Realms before, mainly because it seemed old and crusty, made me wonder why Elminster wasn't saving the world for me, and the players I ran into turned me off (obsessive, not particularly fun, superior types). But if they're pushing the re-set button, I'm...

So, what do you want to play?

Too many choices . . . Probably start out w/ a Dragonborn Fighter or Halfling Paladin - I'm really excited about Warlord, but I suspect they're not going to be as good in melee as Defenders, so I'll probably go with a defender. After that, one of the strikers, if they're as good as they...
