What have been your best/worst 4e combat encounters?

On a side note, I think the game really picks up at 5th level - once players have 2 dailies at their disposal, they seem to stop hoarding dailies quite so much, and the encounters before the "boss fight" start to get more interesting.

What have been your best/worst 4e combat encounters?

Yeah, that fight with Mogor was amazing. (I was the Eladrin Warlord). The one with the vampire in the chapel with the moving bands of deadly shadow was one of your best jobs ever too (and on basically a throw-away fight!) But for me, the spider-web thing stuck out as my favorite so far, just for...

    Why do 4e combats grind?

I started a new thread in the 4e rules forum consolidating my encounter building tips and throwing in a couple more - you can check it out here: http://www.enworld.org/forum/d-d-4th-edition-rules/247249-how-build-encounters-d-d-4th-edition-aka-only-you-can-prevent-grindspace.html

D&D 4E How to build encounters in 4e (aka Only you can prevent Grindspace!)

Hey all - with the plethora of threads about grindspace recently, as well as looking at some of the published adventures WotC has come out with (Keep on the Shadowfell, I'm looking at you), I'm convinced a lot of people could use some help in building encounters. To that end, I've prepared this...

What have been your best/worst 4e combat encounters?

Hehe. I loved it. If you ask my players, that may actually be their 3rd or 4th favorite fight from that campaign. Other good ones from there: 4th level - the monastery siege: The party was trying to take over a ruined monastery as a safe point for a bunch of villagers from Winterhaven who...

What have been your best/worst 4e combat encounters?

Hmm. I will answer first as a DM, then as a player: From behind the screen: My personal favorite by far has been a night fight on a bridge - the players were holding one end of the bridge to keep an undead army from sacking Fallcrest. I think they were 5th level at the time, though they might...

    Why do 4e combats grind?

I haven't found a perfect solution to solos yet. The last solo I used in my homebrew was the 10th level skirmisher that can make clones of itself (so less solo-y), and the last time I used a solo was the dragon encounter in Thunderspire. That seems to be the way to do it - have the solo at or...

    Why do 4e combats grind?

Indeed. One other tip - err on the side of making the combat too hard. This does several good things for you: 1) Combat is automatically more interesting if there's more risk. Obviously you need to vary the level of risk (not every fight is a titanic life vs death struggle), but it's always...

    Why do 4e combats grind?

Yeah, we've all talked about this a lot the last few weeks. IMO, we notice it more than we did in previous editions because the expectations have changed. 4e combat has moments that are flat-out brilliant, and if you slip off that peak into a "6-7 creatures in a room standing there smacking each...

    Thunderspire Labyrinth

I concur with the general consensus - TL is much better than KotS. I'm running one group through it pretty much straight up, and they enjoyed the Seven Pillared Hall as a base much more than they liked Winterhaven. I also peeled out the Well of Demons section and re-skinned it as an extra-planar...

D&D 4E; Official Supplements & Modules You'd Like to See

Hmm . . . More monsters - lots of 'em. More classes and races obviously - I'd particularly like to see a series of "Races of" books like in 3.x - have each book include 5-6 new races, with a ton of feats, magic items, paragon paths and epic destinies for those new races as well as for a few...

Need an idea for an encounter at sea for a Level 10 party

Hmm - I'm planning some naval adventures too coming up. Mine's 4e, but assuming you're looking more for ideas than specific lists of monsters, here's a couple of the ideas I'm bouncing around - 1) The party is being pursued by mercenaries hired to stop them. They see the lights of another ship...

Spotlight Interview: John Rogers on the Manual of the Planes

Indeed, check out Drunk Southern Girls with Guns. While I look at the work Jon-Rog has done for Hollywood and cringe inside, I must say that he sounds like a fantastic DM and he gives great story-hour. The man can do D&D like nobody's business, and I'm ecstatic that he worked on MotP. :)

    Let's make some 4e iconics.

This is my favorite thing ever. I've stolen it for my paladin in our paragon game. :)

I have Demon Queen's Enclave (P2) and Manual of the Planes

Most importantly, where did you get it a week and a half early, so that I can do the same?

    Solving the minion problem: Waves!

Exactly. Minions are great cinematically, but not actually all that significant against any group with a decent amount of area attacks. Depending on the scene I'm trying to set up for the PCs, I may throw an entire encounter's worth of minions at them in addition to the normal encounter. To be...

Compiled info on upcoming classes & races

For those who don't have insider, it's a Primal Controller, with an at-will toggle called Wild Shape that lets it switch back and forth between ranged area attacks and melee attacks. **edit - nevermind, it wasn't Insider. **

Not much interest in the Draconomicon?

You'll be happy to know that Ashardalon was only excluded from the "Famous Dragons" section so that he could be included at greater length as the first entry in the "Draconic Hall of Fame". He's in there with just as much detail as the other heavy hitters. That's brilliant man. I'm gonna steal...

The Druid makes me chew the furniture

Heh. For me, a druid is a giant freaking bear who occasionally shifts into human form to talk to the little people he allows to follow him around, and every once in a while calls down lightning when his puny foes get too far out of range. I think we're both going to be a little unhappy. :) Is...

Why is WotC trying to kill my FLGS?

Let me say one thing first here - I never buy from Amazon. Just personal preference - I like to pick a book up and look it over, then be able to start reading it as soon as I pay for it. I buy about 60% of my gaming stuff from LGSs, and 40% from Borders (close to work, better hours, better...
