D&D 5E Starter set unboxing photos

My assumption for reading CR ratings is based off the 3rd ed claim that a party's typical encounter with an equivalent CR encounter should consume no more than one quarter of the WHOLE party's resources (hit points/spells/disposable items, based on a 4 person party. That's why the party needs to...

    D&D 5E My Hope for D&D 5/N

I'm currently running a Pathfinder game for a crew of roughly CR 7 (by the numbers) monster characters, and I'm finding that I need 10th level npcs to challenge them. (It's an Against The Humans! campaign, essentially the reverse of the Against The Giants! modules.) Designing opponents for them...

    D&D 5E Human racial bonus in 5E

Yeah, I can live with that setup [+1 to all for humans, +2/+1 for demi-humans]. Still not super-happy about the overall human bump, just for thematic reasons, but I can live with it.

    D&D 5E Human racial bonus in 5E

Only other thing I can think of is +1 to five stats of your choice with the new array, but that's kinda goofy. Maybe there's stat boosts attached to the classes?

    D&D 5E Human racial bonus in 5E

Problem is, the default stat array for every one of the playtest packets is 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8. And the new fighter's stats are exactly one more than each of those. So, that's kinda straight outta the "+1 for humans" rulebook. Which, you know, kind of annoying, but ain't nothing stopping me...

D&D 5E Early release dates - Starter Set on July 3, PHB on August 8?

Well, in their defense, I'm not just a random punter, I'm an obsessive weirdo who lives online and has been feverishly collecting info on 5th edition since they first mentioned it. I've got three different iterations of the playtest rules(1st one, the 03-20-13 version, and the last one) on my...

D&D 5E Early release dates - Starter Set on July 3, PHB on August 8?

Well, they're not doing a great job of promoting it to the stores, either. Went up to Myriad Games in Salem, NH, just up the road a few miles from me, and asked them about it, and they hadn't heard anything about it. They're part of the official store network, on the Wizard's store page and...

Dangit! Too slow. Well, just in case somebody ahead of me in the queue get struck by lightning or something, Xzar!

Anyone received their hard copy yet?

Got mine early this week. It's a beautiful piece of work, and if you get mugged while carrying it, you can just beat them to death with it. Seriously, it's like Pathfinder Core Book-sized.

Let's Talk About Middle Earth Gaming

I ran the starter adventure for The One Ring with my crew a while back. They didn't really click with the system (they've got some fairly strong hack-and-slash tendencies, as a group) and the combat system was a bit stiff. The stances seem like an interesting idea, but the in-combat options are...

D&D 5E Lets speculate about the Rules for a new system for exploration.

Yeah, interactive skill challenge would probably describe it best. I don't think ripping the Fatigue effect out of the Journey phase would actually make that much of a difference. If you wanted to replicate that aspect of the rules module, you could do some kind of Weary condition thing that...

D&D 5E Lets speculate about the Rules for a new system for exploration.

Worked pretty much like this: the company is going to travel from one place to another, like from Rivendell to Lake-town, say. They pick a route on the map that they plan to follow, and that'll tell them about how long the trip should take. In the Journey phase, there's four Roles that specific...

D&D 5E Lets speculate about the Rules for a new system for exploration.

I'd like something like the Journey phase from The One Ring. That was the bit of that game that I (and the crew) liked best, rules-wise. Everybody gets a role to play, and there's actual consequences for screwing up your rolls (you're tired from scrambling through the woods all day, trying to...

    D&D 5E Skills & Proficiencies

I like the skill dice mechanic. Possibly that's because it reminds me of Alternity, and I thought Alternity was ACES.

D&D 5E Garments of Critter Muscle and the Giantish Conundrum

Point, there. Back to the notebook. B-) On the other hand, that'd take for-flippin'-ever.

D&D 5E Oct playtest magic items are legend---wait for it--ary!

Well, there is the +1 shield in the Caves of Chaos. Not sure if that counts. They did change the text of that encounter a bit from the first version, and changed it from a +1 heavy shield to a +1 shield, now that there's no "heavy" shield. :erm:

D&D 5E Garments of Critter Muscle and the Giantish Conundrum

Ok, so here's the deal. Because I'm a huge nerd, I just spent a couple of hours picking through the giant stats from 5th, 4th, 3rd, and 2nd edition for the classic 6 giant races (and the ogre). The stuff for 5th comes from both the new packet Belt of Giant Strength info and the Wandering...

D&D 5E Oct playtest magic items are legend---wait for it--ary!

That's from September's Wandering Monsters column at Dungeons & Dragons Roleplaying Game Official Home Page - Article (The Bigger They Come . . .). So, not an actual promise or anything, but what with all the statements about supporting classic D&D lore, a very strong implication that seems to...

    Craft Backgrounds, Specialities, and builds

I made an undead-type heritage for the Sorcerer (and added a few spells to the Sorcerer list, because the current list is crazy small and omits some spells that I think are really good sorcerer material. I still can't think of a good Level 4 power, though. Any ideas? Necrotic Heritage The taint...

    Weapons table issues

Well, I was seeing the pike as including all the pointy-bit-on-a-stick weapons that're longer than your basic melee spear, like 9'+. Yeah, that might be a bit more general than some folks are looking for, but we're already edging toward 15-different-types-of-pole-arm city here, guys. I'd like...
