    D&D (2024) Elf as a class

From my quick breeze through of the build....I'm not sure why you have so much rogue built into a fighter/wizard.

Going in the ole GM notebook....

    D&D 5E What is Quality?

The + threads I am specifically thinking about are those where someone is theorycrafting optional rules or subsystems. The topic might be "Help me create a magic item shop" and within 5 posts somebody will pop in and post "I never use magic item shops" as their helpful contribution. The OP in...

    D&D 5E What is Quality?

I feel that yes, they very much do all the time. That's why the idea of a + thread was proposed and adopted, because people want to discuss rules for X and not have the thread detail into having to defend the existence or need for rules for X.

    D&D 5E What rule(s) is 5e missing?

I'd you are arguing that losing a set of thieves tools is an equal setback to losing a primary weapon then sure, let's start failing forward in combat too.

    D&D 5E What rule(s) is 5e missing?

I am not sure if people dont really understand the fail forward concept or are joking and it's not working via text.

    D&D 5E What rule(s) is 5e missing?

You can still pick a lock without thieves tools, you just do so without the tool bonus. Also note I said "can get it open but you lose the tool" giving the player the option of locked door+tool OR open door.

D&D (2024) The future of edition changes and revisions

An interesting take on the idea of how "samey" two settings are is to imaging a character from one setting randomly teleported to the second. A bard from Greyhawk would have a fair basic understanding of the world mechanics of Faerun but would be mystified at the absence of clerical magic in...

D&D General I am so done with kickstarter

I kick-started the boardgame Fief on May 21, 2019. In February 2021 it delivered to European backers. In May 2021 it was available from US retailers. US backers are still waiting on their copies. FIEF: The Lords Miniatures! KS Exclusive!, via @Kickstarter FIEF: The Lords Miniatures! KS...

    D&D 5E What rule(s) is 5e missing?

All of this, and to say a second time you can fail forward with skill checks in a way that you usually can't with attack rolls. Getting a 17 vs DC20 roll to open a lock....you can succeed on opening it but you will lose that set of picks getting there. Fair for the player and the GM. Getting...

    D&D 5E What rule(s) is 5e missing?

If it's not a hard challenge then the GM probably should not use the recommended hard DC. I can imagine your scenario being not even a check (the guard hates their boss), an easy check (one guard wanders in on the party having finished off the entire break room), very hard (loyal servants of an...

    D&D 5E What rule(s) is 5e missing?

So an individual not particularly skilled at diplomacy and on their own has a difficult time succeeding on a hard challenge. I'm not understanding the disconnect. You still have failing forward in the toolbox to move past the situation.

    D&D 5E What rule(s) is 5e missing?

Not necessarily missing rules, but at this point in the 5e lifecycle there should be a very clear statement from the designers whether or not rogues are expected to regularly be able to use Stealth to activate Sneak Attack in most combat rounds. Similarly at this point there should be very...

D&D 5E Is Tasha's More or Less The Universal Standard?

So...speaking of balance... That last bit, where the losers of the die rolling contest get a Mulligan and can try again, I am strongly opposed to. If everyone is using the same method it's fine, but when you mix methods in a group it's like giving a middle finger to those that used the...

D&D 5E Is Tasha's More or Less The Universal Standard?

I don't think any stat method breaks the game. I'm just pointing out people do use the array. I prefer array/buy because I have never seen a player feel short changed by using it while I have many times when they can't catch a break rolling.

D&D 5E Is Tasha's More or Less The Universal Standard?

I use the standard array for ally characters and have taught others to use the array for all of theirs ... since 3e. At my table only 1 person rolls, everyone else uses the array. Nobody has used point buy in 5e although some did in 3 (can't remember for 4th).

D&D 5E Is Tasha's More or Less The Universal Standard?

It seems fairly trivial (but largely a timesuck) to put a pretty scientific number on the usefulness of the various stats. Something as simple as parsing through every word written in 5e to see the number of references to INT versus DEX is going to skew one way very steeply. I'm fine with 5e...

D&D (2024) The future of edition changes and revisions

Nilbogs being a fey creature existing to sow havoc makes a lot more sense to me than some random reality warping disease called nilbogism.

D&D (2024) The future of edition changes and revisions

Are they making goblins fey or are they changing their origin to say they were once fey but now are not (ala elves) with an associated fey ancestory ability?

D&D (2024) The future of edition changes and revisions

Old=Crotchety Not a lot of teens and young adults lamenting modern 5e changes. In my case I am old...but I adopted "every being can max any stat and adopt every motivation" before 3e rolled around so most changes aren't activating my crochety sensors. I do find myself not interested in the...
