D&D 5E A playthrough of The Shattered Obelisk (spoilers)

This sounds like a very good "in between" session. How much was your improv and how much was in the written adventure?

D&D 5E Rune Knight Is The Best Fighter Overall IMHO.

Worse case scenario, the RK can redirect the attack to themselves, esp if the hill rune is going. Not ideal, but it can save a squishy ally.

D&D 5E Rune Knight Is The Best Fighter Overall IMHO.

I concur. You can hold on to your halberd or great sword etc with one hand for a moment to cast a spell with the other. "Hand economy" is an important, but somewhat obscured, part of the game. A lot of GMs don't care, but some do.

D&D 5E Rune Knight Is The Best Fighter Overall IMHO.

the RN has a number of method to shield allies from attack: the cloud rune the storm rune the runic shield One could argue that the control ability of the fire rune and stone rune can also help protect allies, but that's stretching the definition.

D&D 5E Rune Knight Is The Best Fighter Overall IMHO.

I think it depends what you mean by "best tank". The EK can be more durable, yes, 100%. But the RK is better at protecting the party.

D&D 5E Rune Knight Is The Best Fighter Overall IMHO.

I'm not sure I know how to answer that either. I should also note that the RK I played was, for a number of reasons, not "optimized" - he was a dex-build melee fighter, and RK works best with strength build (to take advantage of the size). However, the subclass is so strong it still worked...

D&D 5E Rune Knight Is The Best Fighter Overall IMHO.

I've seen all 3* in play, so I think I have a fair understanding of what each subclass can do. *I don't consider the echo knight because I haven't seen it in play but also because how poorly written the subclass is. It's a mess. I'm not sure I would agree that the RK is "the best". They have...

D&D General Wishing Away The Adventure

that's the fundamental challenge of high level play for a GM. Not that the fighter does 200 damage/round. Rather, the numerous in-game ways casters can avoid, solve or bypass in-game challenges with magic. And why wouldn't the high level PCs do this? If the adventure is dangerous and...

D&D General Wishing Away The Adventure

And why do the other PCs let an untrustworthy coward be in the party? "I'm sorry, this isn't working out. Here's your share of the party treasury. get out"

D&D General Lore contributions from players into a campaign

I used to be a bit of a "lore tyrant", but now I try to leave gaps, cracks for the PC's creation. Say that I have a vision for a setting (Yoon Suin) and a player really wants to be a certain race that doesn't "fit" in the Yoon Suin setting. Maybe this race is from a far away land? So the...

D&D 5E Justin Alexander's review of Shattered Obelisk is pretty scathing

This is the first time I hear of this cage of name concept and... why would you let yourself be trapped in that? If you want to play X that "isn't the stereotypical X"... then go ahead and do that. Who's enforcing this cage of name?!?!
