Dragon 400: Born of Shadow Themes

Thanks for the praise, guys! I am very pleased with how it all turned out in the end.

    Just how compatible is Essentials?

What are people seeing that's different systematically? They are compatible products. I often have one or two players using builds from essentials and three to four using classic (so-to-speak). I have not seen a new, foreign mechanic, or something that makes meshing them difficult. Don't read...

    Just how compatible is Essentials?

Ditto. Curious to know. I run games with a mix. I design content as well.

We design compelling monsters. I wouldn't say we "wing it".

MV: Threats to the Nentir Vale in my hands

Correct. No adventure, but plenty of story to kick any campaign into warp 9 :)

There's no specific information on monster creation, as I recall.

I did a quick little video where I unboxed this product. I thought it would be neat considering I worked on it. The quality of my video is "meh" because I was broadcasting live on uStream. Anyways, some might find it of value. YouTube - ‪Unboxing - Monster Vault: Threats to the Nentir Vale‬‏

MV: Threats to the Nentir Vale in my hands

Yay, I'm glad you like Mr. M (the Treant) :) The entire Treant section was awesome to work on with one of the other designers--one that I am very close with. I hope you like the storyline behind it all and the comparison/contrast within.

I'm just going on record as saying that I am much cooler (and better looking) than my older brother.

A strong controller would be an asset to use against Calastryx, even with her Action Recovery. You are still mitigating her ability to unleash hell on a player and would be more efficient than many leader builds when considering the +/- of HP distribution (preventing loss versus granting gain).

There are rules for scaling monsters in one of the newer books (sorry, I forget which one). I'm sure we could go from there and help you get this bad-boy up to Epic. You're players are in for a fun surprise ;)

I did not name it as it was previously released under the old Hammerfast book.

By the way, Mike Mearls was the original designer of this creature before I was able to get my hands on it for MV2. He should get credit here, too.

Yeah, getting pummeled by a nasty creature, then having a fourth head pop out, definitely increases the pucker-factor on the battlemap :)

I also wanted to add, because it looks like there is confusion. The Kobold that shares the page isn't necessarily something that would be in the encounter with Calastryx. If you read the story behind it, it would work better as a lower level seed that leads you into a final encounter with...

Dear bloody god: Calystrx (Threats to Nentir Vale Preview)

Nothing official that I know of. By the wording, it can equally be argued that it goes the other way--which is fine. She is still deadly either way you go :) If you were going purely by the way the power is written, and consider her other abilities, the zone would end after each initiative...

Dear bloody god: Calystrx (Threats to Nentir Vale Preview)

Calastryx's turn (not one of her heads, mind you) cycles just like the players. So, if she uses the zone power on Initiative count 30, it lasts all the way around until the end of Initiative count 10 on the following turn. Separating out each head could be cumbersome to say the least and would...

The key here is looking at the phrase until the end of Calastryx's next turn.
