D&D 5E Elemental Evil companion spells underwhelming?

How so? Both spells cast at 2nd level deal 3d6 cold damage to the affected targets. I'm AFB right now, but I don't think Elemental Affinity interacts with saves at all, which is the only aspect of the cold damage portion of ice knife (no damage on Dex save) which is different than sss (half...

D&D 5E Elemental Evil companion spells underwhelming?

In addition to Shadowdweller00's point, SSS is Evocation, which makes it more attractive to an Evoker Wizard.

D&D 5E Battlemap Vs. Theater of the Mind

As a player, I prefer a battlemat for all but the simplest of combats (like the "shanking a guard" scenario brought up earlier). I like being able to see exactly how many orcs I can hit with my fireball, or how to take advantage of choke points, or whatever I need to make an informed choice of...

D&D 5E Elemental Evil companion spells underwhelming?

Yes, like raging barbarians, although the difference is slight. Max damage is the same using either spell. (8 from the arrow, 6 from the spell = 14) With Hunter's Mark, the barbarian takes 14/2 = 7. With Flame Arrows, the barbarian takes 8/2 + 6 = 10. Not sure if that alone is worth a 3rd...

D&D 5E Darksun Bow alternative materia

    Obsidian is also very brittle.

    D&D 5E Most useful benefit?

No, I don't think it does, but there is precedent for the proficiency bonus to stack with itself in the Rogue's Expertise ability.

D&D 5E Elemental Evil companion spells underwhelming?

Yes, but a 3rd level slot? More importantly, a 3rd level spell known?

D&D 5E Elemental Evil companion spells underwhelming?

Frostbite is nice because there is now an Evocation cantrip with a save, so Evokers can benefit from both Empowered Evocation and Potent Cantrip with the same spell.

    D&D 5E Most useful benefit?

I'd definitely stay away from the Con19 option (I hate that D&D went back to the fixed-score ability boost items, in general). No character I've ever made (and most other people, most likely) dumps Con, so the most you will get is a few points. Considering how tightly focused the item's...

[UPDATED] WotC Gives You Some Official 5E Modern Armor!

You got me on the monk. That "A magical aura that reduces all damage by 5" is rather wishy-washy because it's so hypothetical, though.

D&D 5E Elemental Evil companion spells underwhelming?

The only advantages I can think of that Flame Arrows brings over Hunter's Marks is multiple simultaneous targets, and targets that have piercing damage resistance, but not fire damage resistance. So, I agree that it's weak, if you (the ranger) have to cast it yourself. If you can convince your...

    D&D 5E Mage armor and A shield

Not only is there the opportunity cost of getting Mage Armor that way, but wearing magical (physical) armor can get you other benefits the spell does not.

[UPDATED] WotC Gives You Some Official 5E Modern Armor!

Not really, if memory serves. The only place I can recall that has the 3E-style "subtract a fixed number from damage" damage reduction is the Heavy Armor Master feat. 5E's version is Damage Resistance, which is percentage-based. Perhaps there is 3E-style DR as a monster ability that I'm not...

D&D 5E Why I love 5E - the renewal of Theater of Mind

You call it I call it "not having to ask the DM in the first place". Player: "I move here and cast fireball. Ogres 1, 2, and 4 take... *roll*... 42 fire damage, Dex save DC 15 for half damage." DM: "*roll**roll**roll*... Ogre 1 makes his save and is still alive, but very crispy. Ogres 2 and 4...

D&D 5E Why I love 5E - the renewal of Theater of Mind

You use TotM for everything? I suppose our group should try that. It would cut down on the time wasted drawing all those blacksmith shops and taverns.

D&D 5E Why I love 5E - the renewal of Theater of Mind

He might've felt differently if he had access to a dry-erase battle mat. I'd agree with him if playing with minis required constructing sets out of foam core, or something like that.

    D&D 5E The 5E Art is Awesome

That's how I feel when I think about monks. You're fighting otyughs, and fire elementals, and black puddings, and you're going to try to touch them with your bare skin ON PURPOSE?

    D&D 5E Things I like and dislike about 5e...

4E was the only edition that didn't "feel" D&D to me, from glancing through the books. A trusted friend told me it was "a cute little game, but it's not D&D", which confirmed what I read. I read things like this all the time, and I wonder why. There's nothing in 5E that I can see that would make...

    D&D 5E The 5E Art is Awesome

For me, I haven't been satisfied with both the art and the system for any version of D&D that I've played (excluding 4E, which I skipped over entirely). Love 2E's art (especially Caldwell, Easley, and Elmore), hate the system. Hate 3E's art, love the system. Hate 5E's art, tolerating the system...

    D&D 5E Cost/Benefit Analysis of True Strike

Minor nitpick: the other spell is the one that would need to be quickened, because of the general (and just as stupid, IMHO) spellcasting restriction that when casting a spell with a bonus action, the only other spell you can cast is a cantrip that turn. TS would be the cantrip, and you'd...
