Forked Thread: Should players know the rules?

I don’t think players should need to know the rules. That said, I prefer games with rules simple enough that everyone at the table can understand them without much effort. Still, it’s up to each player whether they bother to or not.

    When will PDFs be over?

I know. I’ve always been one to approach things from the point of solving a real problem that real people are really having. That said, however, the company I currently work for, I wouldn’t have joined 10 years ago for that very reason. Yet, out of that grew a product that solves real needs...

Got the D&D 4e Starter Set...So whatcha wanna know?

Even I am amazed by the number of Macs in my team at work. And we’re not graphic artists, we’re embedded C programmers. Once you add in the Linux desktops, Windows is in the minority. The majority of Mac users I know don’t run Windows on their Mac.

Favorite game system independent of setting / genre

So, having thought about it some, I’m tempted to say: None. I guess that’s why I can’t keep myself from tinkering with homebrew systems that I never finish. Taking another tack at it: My favorite systems right now are classic D&D and classic Traveller. (Tho’ I borrow the nd6 ≤ ability score bit...

Favorite game system independent of setting / genre

I want to think on it a bit before replying to your question, but I thought you might find it interesting that my group is currently playing MSH. It’s a game that finds its way into our rotation regularly.

    RuneQuest and Traveller

Yep. Also, having a bunch of LBB in one BFB can make it harder to find the page you need quickly. Assuming that what works with cT works with MgT... I have the MT core books & T20 main book. I never referenced them in the recent cT campaign. But, I did use Personal Weapons of Charted Space...

    RuneQuest and Traveller

The quality is fine. (IIRC, Marc & his wife actually run a print shop as their day jobs.) The format is a bit unwieldy. (Binding on the short end.) The reprints are great buy, though. Even adjusted for the cost of inflation, they’re still cheaper than the originals were. Much of it, I would...

    RuneQuest and Traveller

Traveller was the first RPG I played on a regular basis. I’m not crazy about any editions except classic. I bought the reprints to use as reference. At the table, I use my old Starter Traveller set supplemented by select LBBs acquired via second-hand bookstores and eBay. That said, what I’ve...

    When will PDFs be over?

sigh There you go. There’s the answer to this thread right there in genshou’s entire post. So many things that we have the building blocks to do, but which get met with so much resistance because people can’t see beyond their experience or beyond where we are to where we could be. It’s the...

Got the D&D 4e Starter Set...So whatcha wanna know?

Why should D&D—even an intro set—especially an intro set—require Microsoft Windows? Besides, much of the appeal of face-to-face RPGs for many is that they let us get away from the 21st century for a bit. I’m just saying’.

Hello from the new guy and general RPG Q's

I got my copy of Mongoose’s Dragon Warriors from Amazon. (Mainly because I had a gift card.) The other Mongoose product I have was bought from a local game store. Their products aren’t exactly hard-to-find.

    Random Character Generation

Yeah. That’s the main reason I don’t like point-buy ability scores in D&D. If I’m going to do point-buy, I want the option to trade ability score points for feats or skill points or other stuff. I want the option to trade feats or skill points or other stuff for ability score points. I’d rather...

    When will PDFs be over?

First, let me say that I’m not defending XSL. I think it was a mistake, but the idea behind it wasn’t bad. It’s a big paradigm shift. It’s about marking up the content of the document so that automated “back-ends” can do what’s right for the medium they’re targeting. No, you’re not going to...

Hello from the new guy and general RPG Q's

Some more stuff... The original publishers of RuneQuest have a new edition of their generic version, Basic Roleplaying, out. Steve Perrin himself sells a “successor” that he calls SPQR. Traveller’s creator, Mark Miller, sells reprints of Traveller and many other GDW games. He’s also got his...

    When will PDFs be over?

I love PDF for the things it was meant for. I hate that it has become something of a de facto standard for things it isn’t the best choice for. I think I understand many of the reasons (as former Director of Advanced Technologies for ibooks.com), but I’m not sure if I can put them in words well...

    Dragon Warriors RPG

Imagine if B/X D&D had been written by Brits. ^_^ Mechanically, it seems to me like a long lost cousin of B/X. Flavor-wise, it’s closer to Warhammer FRP, but less gonzo. If that helps at all. Anyway, that’s the impression based on spending a little time with the gamebooks in 2005 and currently...

    Random Character Generation

I probably come down a little hard on point-based systems in this kind of convo, just because my conclusions tend to be a bit counter to the “conventional wisdom”. Truth is, I enjoy just about every spot on the spectrum. They all have trade-offs. Even with point-buy systems, though, unless...

Just got mine today. So far, I’m really wishing I’d found this game “back in the day”.

    Vaporware

I wish that more often than not companies would release kick-ass products that are available the day they announce them than barely adequate products that are over-hyped even a day before I can buy it.
