    Rate WotC as a company

    I really tried to give them a 3 or 4, but I ended up with a 2. Let’s start with the computer products for 3e, which was entirely mismanaged. And they dared say, “Buy this crap or you won’t get anything else.” Lots of signs make me feel they’ve learned nothing in this area. Then there’s the...

    Wisdom = Willpower... huh?

    Um. When you use the word “wisdom” whilst talking about D&D ability scores, it is jargon.

    Wisdom = Willpower... huh?

    Three points: When you’re trying to capture the full range of a person’s innate abilities in six numbers, each one is going to have to cover a lot of ground. When you’re trying to come up with names for things when designing a game, there’s seldom a perfect choice. You just try to find the...

    Green Ronin and 4E

    Did Dragon Fist ever get published? Is there any hope for it any more?

    Changeover poll

    (o_O) The “more rp less rules” people in my group are exactly the ones who care least what system we play. When you’re not paying attention to the rules anyway, why would you care?

    Green Ronin and 4E

    I’d suggest giving it a try. During the years when I didn’t play any form of D&D, my group took D&D modules and treated them as systemless. We ignored the stats and made up whatever made sense for the system we were using on-the-fly. It was neither boring nor a lot of work.

    Green Ronin and 4E

    I’m curious whether you’ve talked to Wizards about licenses specific to the products you’d like to do. (While the GSL is out there for anybody to use, that doesn’t preclude negotiating a separate license.) Although I think it’s probably just as well if GR doesn’t bother with 4e products.

    Forked Thread: Changeover poll

    The real achievement of the later day TSR was that they managed to go out of business with a product and brand that was still very strong. These things are very hard to know. I moved to a different city a few years after 2e came out. I never thought I’d play 2e or any form of D&D again at the...

    Changeover poll

    I only get to play one night a week†. And that’s Monday night. We all work regular M–F schedules, so we can’t game too late. Plus, some of the group work later shifts, so we usually don’t get started until 8–8:30pm. Now, I realize that some people only get to game bi-weekly or once-a-month, but...

    "You realize, of course, this mean war."

    I never said it didn’t suck. I never said it was redeemable. I simply said your favorite sucked more. (^_^)

    Changeover poll

    It’s very strange to me that the results on the ends have gotten the most votes and the ones in the middle the least. While I’m sure there are some people that might not enjoy it, I heartily recommend mixing it up and playing a lot of different games/editions. That way you get to enjoy the good...

    Edition Wars !?!?

    I agree. It was people online talking about what they liked about one edition and didn’t like about another that helped me to figure out why I was frustrated with one edition and guided me to recognizing an edition I’d previously dismissed as my current favorite. Not only that, but it has...

    What direction will D&D head in?

    No. Please explain.

    New Faces (Forked: Its the terminology that kills me...)

    I never said that. Just that WoW doesn’t convince me that even the Platonically ideal RPG (if I still believed such could be achieved) would get a significant portion of “everybody” into the hobby.

    What direction will D&D head in?

    My experience is that the amount of role-playing has stayed fairly constant. The stories I read about the earliest campaigns have shown me that they were about a lot more than “kill them and take their stuff”. It seems only the histories written by people who weren’t there think that the...

    New Faces (Forked: Its the terminology that kills me...)

    <shrug> I don’t know a lot about it. What I do know, is that among the people I know, more don’t play it than do. Odd example that. Last time I fished, it was no different than the first time. Bamboo pole, line, sinker, bobber, and worm. And I certainly enjoyed it more. Plenty of fishermen...

    Advice on Being a Good Player

    Yeah. Meant to mention that. It can be hard for new players to sit back and let everyone else have their “turn”. It’s easy to monopolize the game without really realizing it. One way to try to prevent this is—whenever you want to tell the DM that your PC does something—discuss the idea with the...

    Advice on Being a Good Player

    Remind the DM if he seems to be handling something in a different way than he did before. Offer the DM your suggestions on how something might be handled. Mention to the DM any situational modifiers and why you think they might apply. Let the DM know when you think he’s making a rule mistake...

    What direction will D&D head in?

    Two points: A dungeon crawl is much more than combat. Just about every story about B2 I’ve heard anyone tell was about what happened in the keep, not what happened in the Caves of Chaos.

    New Faces (Forked: Its the terminology that kills me...)

    I’m not saying new gamers are a bad thing at all. When I see a point that I think is questionable, I’m simply...er...questioning it. (^_^)
