Out of Print games You Miss...

No. For a few reasons.I seldom used any of the support when it was availableMany of these games never really had supportThose that did have support, I can still buy the few things I might use second-hand Now, there are games that are out-of-print that I don’t have, never played (so I don’t...

Forked Thread: I hate game balance! (How elves wrecked the wizard and game balance)

My experience was similar in a number of ways. One thing I remember seeing though: The players who choose human PCs generally put more thought into their actions than the players with elf PCs. So, those human PCs—in my group—often were more effective than the elf PCs despite the elves’...

Out of Print games You Miss...

I don’t have to miss them because I kept them. And I’ve expanded my collection cheap via second-hand book stores and eBay.

    Poll: 1E or 2E?

Precisely. I choose to play B/X. If given a choice between 1e and 2e, I’d be tempted to go 2e only because by simply saying “without optional rules”, I get something mechanically not too far from B/X. But no matter which edition I’m playing, it’s the oAD&D books that provide me the most...

Which version of D&D or D&D-like will you be playing by the end of 2008 ?

It could honestly be any of those, with maybe equal chances. Except for “I’ll be playing a D&D-like system”. Between at least seven editions of D&D (by my way of counting) and so many great non-D&D-like systems, I don’t think the odds are good for the “D&D-like” category.

    Poll: 1E or 2E?

The companion poll would be: If you needed inspiration no matter what system you planned to play, which edition would you look to? (^_^) For me, that’d be a completely different answer.

    Poll: 1E or 2E?

I did choose classic D&D. Specifically, the 1981 Basic and Expert rules. If I had to run a version of AD&D...hmm... I think I could stand running core 2e without the optional rules. (That means only the main four classes, no NWPs, etc.) Well, I might allow one or two of the optional classes...

    4E and RPG Theory (GNS)

I definitely agree about the latter point. I’m unsure whether you and I agree about the former point. The lesson I see in the three-fold model is that here are three important approaches to play, each player and GM uses all three of them, so your game should support all of them. Sometimes...

    Lasso problem

I don't remember whether there was a by-the-book answers in 2e, but why wouldn't you just choose an appropriate strength score?

Now that 4e is upon us, what will you do?

My group? We'll be continuing our homebrew horror campaign. Who knows what'll be up next. I think someone mentioned running a D&D3.5 game. I'm thinking about various ultralight systems for maybe a pulp sci-fi something. No doubt we'll give D&D 4e a try sometime, but nothing "on the schedule" so...

    xp division for 2ed party

By the book? I dunno. What do I do? Take any excuse to give the PCs XP for treasures. The only rule is that you won’t get XP for the same treasure more than once. (Unless it’s an unusual circumstance that I feel deserves it.) e.g. The PCs defeated a monster and bagged some loot. I gave them...

Did you retire characters at name level?

In my experience, campaigns always fizzled before that. In fact, I think my highest level PC was ninth level. That includes oAD&D, 2e, 3e, and classic D&D. I have a dream of running an ongoing (classic) D&D campaign in which name level PCs tend to go into semi-retirement. I envision something...

    Heraldry Drawing

Blazon was easy, but I wasn’t thrilled with the results. I haven’t found anything better for me than just firing up OpenOffice’s drawing layer. I just wish I had a really good set of vector versions of common heraldric animals and things. I do fine on the simple geometric stuff, but drawing a...

What rules light fantasy system would you recommend for 'winging it'?

I haven’t actually played any of these yet, but if I were doing it I’d probably choose: Star CadetsDungeon SquadAnd I’ll second Risus Edit: OK, Star Cadets isn’t fantasy. Edit: On the “building” issue: My suggestions probably fail on this criterion, but to me, one of the many advantages of a...

    Recommended 1E house rule compliations?

I see what you’re saying. Although—personally—the older I get, the more I learn that things I thought would be true by real-world logic often are not. (^_^)

    Recommended 1E house rule compliations?

The players declare their actions. In particular, spell casters declare whether and what spell they are casting. Each side rolls 1d6. Highest roll acts first. Ties are simultaneous.(Within a side, the order individuals take their turns is up to that side.)If a caster takes damage or is forced to...

    Recommended 1E house rule compliations?

In my experience then, you need this: Moldvay Basic rulebookAD&D (1e) MMAD&D (1e) DM screenAD&D (1e) PHBAD&D (1e) module or B2 (optional) As DM, you read the Moldvay book. You basically run it as if it were a Basic game, except using the combat/save matrices from the AD&D DM screen and the...
