    What 5e got wrong

Elemental Clerics were there from the very beginning of the setting, with the release of the original boxed set in 1991.

Help me flesh out a plot idea

If you're playing true to previous iterations of RL, detect evil/good spells won't work, at least, not the way they normally work. As for why is this vampire/spawn a humble innkeeper? Maybe ... He's just temporarily posing as one because he's waiting for a specific person to pass through...

Brainstorm: Let's generate a bunch of really cool and unique ocean based random encounter.... GO!

A hole in the water leading straight down to the bottom of the ocean floor. A column of water leading straight up into the sky for as far as the eye can see. A massive arch functioning as a portal linking your campaign world with another campaign world with wildly varying rules of magic/physics...

Brainstorm: Let's generate a bunch of really cool and unique ocean based random encounter.... GO!

A patch of water that the PCs' ship runs afoul of that is as dense as earth and rock, and can be stood upon by the PCs, but has fish and other aquatic life swimming through it with ease. What's even stranger is that some of these fish leap up out of the water and dive back into the dense water...

    D&D 5E D&D-ish novels?

Not sure if this was mentioned, but Chronicles of the Raven by James Barclay is very D&D-ish. The point of view is from a mercenary company called the Raven, and how they get drawn into defending their realm against invading barbarians, and then quickly spirals from there into crazy anti-magic...

D&D 5E Are players always entitled to see their own rolls?

Well, the situational secret rolling implies that your players will metagame rather than roleplay the result of the roll, which further implies a bit of a lack of trust, or at least a lack of immersion in your campaign. If you haven't already, I'd discuss your expectations of staying in-role...

    D&D 5E D&D-ish novels?

I enjoyed the Jim Butcher Codex Alera series, for its pseudo-Roman pseudo-Pokemon feel.;) Really though, it's an enjoyable series, with an interesting cast of diverse characters for that D&D party vibe. The Contact series of historical fiction novels by W. Michael and Kathleen O'Neal Gear...

    D&D 5E 4d6 Drop the Lowest Etiquette

Most of my players usually opt for a standard array, but on the rare occasion a player goes for rolling stats, they keep what they get (whether it's good, bad, or mediocre).

Monstrous race subclass combinations. Trolls! Slaadi! Yuan-ti! Harpies!

I like it. Have you thought about custom backgrounds for these monsters to "complete" the package of playable monster?

D&D 5E Could a Mind Flayer (Illithid) devour another Mind Flayer's brain...?

I can totally see this. In the Dragonlance version of mind flayers, there were two different castes, the elite (which were basically standard mind flayers), and the savage (more physical and less mental versions). Given they dwell in dark, steamy, isolated jungles, you could totally go with a...

D&D 5E How do you handle Commoners in your game?

Ooh. 9) Mobile target dummies 10) Trap triggers - just walk them into any area you suspect of having traps and watch the sparks fly! 11) Choking hazards for creatures - have that marauding red dragon choke on an entire village of commoners for easy xp
