D&D Next Chat Transcript (Mike Mearls & Jeremy Crawford)

It'll be nice to break out the caves of chaos in the new edition and see how it fares compared to the old version. Having pregens at the beginning frees up more time to actually play with the rules and see what is/can be broken. If we're looking at a span of 4-8 weeks (round 2 this summer...

3rd Horseman of the Apocalypse: 4E Hits the Bargain Bin

During the 3.5 to 4 change over I was able to score a number of books through Amazon at a steep discount (paid more for shipping than the books). Keep an eye out there as well.

    Rule of Three 2/28

Tucker's Kobolds would be an extreme example of what could be done to limit multiple return trips to the same dungeon area (presumably with the help of the 15MAD). Using milestones (finish a section/area/number of encounters) would work best IMO to keep the 15MAD from becoming a common issue.

D&D Blog - Kings and Castles

Another vote for a Companion style rules module. The rules were detailed enough to get you going without bogging you down with additional "simulation" issues.

Kits, Paragon Paths, Prestige Classes, and Themes; Oh My!

I can support this type of option as long as the "cost" for the theme is reasonable. Noble family gives you a postitive adjustment when dealing with others of equal station (call it courtly manners, etc). Family falling on hard times might negate that (bad rep for whatever caused the fall?)...

Do You Want A D&D That Is "Faster, Better, Smarter"?

Definitely faster, smarter, better. I've always been a fan of hybrid D&D. Take what you consider to be the best parts of the different editions and leave the rest in the box. If they can pull it off in some kind of cohesive manner, DDN has the potential to be the game that I've been trying to...

D&D 5E Should 5e have a "default setting" and cosmology?

Maybe it's an AD&D holdover for me but I prefer little or no default setting information. Cosmology deserves a short chapter as an example of how the planes of existence but limit it to a paragraph per plane listing possible inhabitants and conditions. You know they're going to put out a book...

    Advantage

I prefer this term over Advantage, if for no other reason than eliminating the perception that one player is doing a better job than someone else. I've always allowed bonuses based on set up (whether it's something said in character (i.e. taunts, etc) to something more tactical (i.e...

A Better Way to Do Critical Hits?

I honestly can't remember where this came from but our house rule has always been critical on a natural 20 and a second roll to determine the multiplier (e.g. 1-15 = x2, 16-18 = x3, 19-20 = x4). Granted it could end a fight sooner than you had planned but there was some satisfaction from that...

D&D 5E My D&D Next Experience at DDXP

Groups formed specifically to play 5E will have to sit down and hash out the rules modules that they are comfortable with. Joining after the fact will mean accepting what is already set in stone at the table. The more things change, the more they stay the same (at least in that respect).

After DDXP, how are you feeling about D&En?

I'm looking forward to this new edition. The only concern I have is how the different rules modules will fit together (i.e. can you have one player using the grid rules beside someone who doesn't see the need for the grid?) in actual play. Guess we have to wait for the open playtest to...

    Essentials Character Sheet Online!

Everything you need on one side of a piece of paper. Very nice indeed.

Round Four: Back to the old school modules!

The first 3 UK modules (Sinister secret of Saltmarsh, Danger at Dunwater (?), and the last one had Sahuagin in it as the final bosses to be defeated) were great but I can't say I remember the ones you have listed in the poll.

What do you think of the 4e Bard?

For the first time (any edition) I'm interested in seeing what a bard can add to the D&D play experience. In the past they've always seemed incomplete (the jack of all trades didn't seem to master anything), now they seem to be able to hold their own in any group.

    Keeping urban campaigns simple

Great advice, keep some things handy to work with; names of Inns, taverns, etc...NPC names (some great resources are out there like this ). Once you have the look and sound of your city down, think about the smells (wierd, I know)...it can make your description come to life.

    [CC3] jaerdaph's CC3 Maps, Dungeons, Floorplans etc...

Great looking work! The blue/white look brings back the memories and works well with the Castle of the Mad Archmage (CZ) feel. I hope you do the rest of the maps for this as well.

Hope you like your DDI Subscription!

While it took a couple of emails and about a 36 hour period, I didn't have any trouble (more than the above) cancelling the auto renew. There will always be issues and until they can get WotC and the billing company to remove that silly feature, it will plague them.

    Gencon 2009 Indy

I don't think I'll know until after next month but I'd like to make it again. I didn't get time to really do much more than shop and chat last year so I'm hoping to be able to do more than a single day this year.

    Gaming and Your Significant Other

The spousal unit does not game. I schedule my game nights when I know she has other things to do (even if it's just a night of television that she prefers). Having seperate intrests (I hate antique shopping for instance so she doesn't ask for me to participate...just carry, lol) is healthy and...

    Dming Help

Fun = Correct. That's the only rule that really matters. Any ruleset can be fun, you just have to allow what makes the game enjoyable for you and your players. 3 hours for a basic/quick adventure sounds about right. If you think that things are to easy, add some additional challenges (i.e...
