    Word help -- area sizes!

"Distant?" Are you looking for a description of an area, or a distance from the party? Is there going to be another range beyond 10 miles?

What are you running right now?

Running a play-by-Slack, text only, West Marches, Torchbearer game in a world that the players and I Microscoped into existence when the pandemic first hit. Real life has thrown a series of monkey wrenches into things though, and we haven't been able to get a group together to play since the...

Solo pick your own adventures using google forms

You might be interested in the programming language Inform (Inform 7) I did a group project a couple of years ago where a random assortment of game designers and puzzles buffs all learned the language and spat out a really bizarre Interactive Fiction game in a couple of months. The language...

D&D 5E How do you measure distances outside of combat?

It depends entirely on the game (exploration, intrigue, hex crawl, whatever) but I usually describe distances in travel time.

What normally happens after a TPK?

I threw in with "other." It depends too much on the system expectations, where we are in the game, and players' desires and expectations for me. For us, I don't think that there is a "norm." I tend to put it back on the shoulders of the group and have them decide what they want to do. I'd...

Why the Strong Preference for Discord in Remote Games?

You can change your handle, but I thought you could only have one avatar per account, right?

Why the Strong Preference for Discord in Remote Games?

I prefer Slack over Discord for one real reason, and one silly bias, but Slack has one big strike against it that I don't think Discord has. Slack offers built in conversation threading, which I really really like because it allows for several side conversations to happen in the same virtual...

Why the Strong Preference for Discord in Remote Games?

That's the entire reason why I started my game as a text only, no-video game. I rarely use Zoom myself, but it seemed like everyone in my life was being stressed out by it and it didn't seem like something people were going to want to do as entertainment.

Where and how do you play?

Online in a text only, play-by-Slack game that uses Google Sheets for character sheets and as a virtual tabletop of sorts.

D&D Movie/TV Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith Join D&D Movie

I work in the film industry. CGI extended backgrounds, additional crowd elements, foliage replacement, precipitation removal is everywhere. It's just gotten to the point where it's good enough that you don't notice it. Once the door is open and CGI is in the budget it just gets used. It is...

D&D Movie/TV Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith Join D&D Movie

I can not imagine a version of this movie that doesn't have a fully stocked CGI budget. That's just not how feature films are made anymore.

D&D Movie/TV Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith Join D&D Movie

I am hopelessly optimistic, but "hope for the best, plan for the worst" is my personal and professional mantra. I think that this project has a lot of things going against it, but there are two key elements that are huge red flags from my vantage point. The biggest one is that finding the...

My mother-in-law continues to operate under the assumption that Chris Pine's character in Wonder Woman was Captain America.

What books unrelated to TTRPGs are the most useful to you for TTRPGs?

The books that a person is going to list gives you a hint as to how they see (or maybe want to see) the world around them. I personally find that any history book written in a way that explains the interconnected and interdisciplinary links of why things have happened, as opposed to just...

What books unrelated to TTRPGs are the most useful to you for TTRPGs?

I have to say that Kirkman's comic book "Invincible" swept away ALL of my knee jerk GMing reactions with regards to the characters' friend/foe dichotomies. So many of my plot twists nowadays revolve around sworn enemies being thrust into the position of "the only ally we can trust" or vice versa.

What books unrelated to TTRPGs are the most useful to you for TTRPGs?

Rainfall is exactly that. Put out something that collects water and see how many inches of water you end up with. There are some minor complications due to airflow, environment, and level, but that's what it's measuring. It's not going to give you a super accurate measurement, but if you...

How big are the biggest cities in your campaign world?

I was assuming that the biggest city in my Sumerian post apocalyptic Torchbearer campaign was around 6000 people, a little less than a tenth of what it had been in real life sans apocalypse. I also think that you're reading the chart a bit backwards. It's not saying that a population of...

Religion in Call of Cthulhu: Boon or Bane?

Yeah, I always prefer modern religions to just ever so gently brush up against an understanding of what the mythos is. I've always kinda liked the idea that the stories we tell ourselves were kinda put there to protect our feeble little monkey brains from attempting to tackle the big picture.
