You are assuming the wizard is turning the shield off and on. As long as his other hand is free, he can cast with the shield turned on. This is what I would require for the wizard to get the shield bonus in a round.

Re: Tough Call This is not a "what can you do with a free action" question. You cannot wield a shield while you are using a two handed weapon. Both would have to be used simultaneously. What you want is an animated shield, then you get your shield bonus and can use your two handed weapon.

Correct, in all previous versions of D&D they have had that same defense. They are death to mid and low level mages.

Ask your DM if he uses the training rules, if he does you must complete the training before you get the spells.

It depends on what you are doing. If you are raising a +1 ring to a +2, you pay the difference. If you are adding +2 STR to a +2 CON belt, you would pay double the cost of making a +2 belt by itself.

I've done the same thing in my game. I've also ruled that the shadow summoned by the SD is a creature from the shadow dimension, not an undead shadow. I've been contemplating removing the STR drain from it as well.

1st Edition In both 1st and 2nd edition a natural 3 or less was always a failure. You had to reach the levels of near dietyhood (dragon or power) to save on a 2 or 3.
