    Game Bloopers and Quotes

My group was fighting a bunch of oni (magical ogres from OA) a few sessions ago. The wild elf ranger's player did not realize they had reach and fired his bow at one of them from 10' away. I even asked him "are you sure", and since he didn't reconsider, I made him suffer the AoO as a learning...

    More Castles & Crusades details

This sounds good, and I am really interested in seeing how C&C turns out, but I hope the Trolls can avoid two of the pitfalls (IMO, of course), of earlier editions: 1) Every fighter is the same as every other fighter. 2) There is little strategy except "I hit him - he hits me". To avoid these...

Calling creatures and stealing their stuff

I should have been more clear: I did make that ruling for planar binding. For summoning, it is clearly spelled out, anyway.

Calling creatures and stealing their stuff

I ruled for my campaign that anything the outsider brings with it disappears as soon as the outsider disappears. Not sure if there is an official ruling on that. The only spell I would consider feasible for stealing stuff would be gate.

I got to playtest Castles and Crusades!

Sounds like it might be what I am looking for. My main problem with d20/D&D is how it gets decidedly more complicated to run at higher levels. How does C&C compare - as far as you are allowed to tell? Sadly, I don't have the time right now to get involved in playtesting. Thank you for the...

I got to playtest Castles and Crusades!

So the playtesters and people of TLG made it quite clear that C&C is not rules-light d20. But how rules-light is it going to be compared to D&D/d20? I would still be very interested in a faster D&D-style game, even if it is not compatible with my other stuff. And is there any chance a sneak...

What Spells give the DM the most headache...

Whoah! That totally slipped by me! Talk about dumb editing in 3.5  I can't say I gave the magic chapter more than a cursory read-through. But apparently relying solely on the changes in spell descriptions between editions isn't enough.

What Spells give the DM the most headache...

Sadly, that only works for a) spellcasters of b) sufficient level. My group is currently about level 14, so the opponents are level 12-15. So they may have dimension door, teleport, or contingency, but no mind blank. And if the party manages to engage them twice in one day, most of their...

Is there a point to the Quick Draw feat?

The character's I have seen get the most out of quick draw are definitely archers. During that first round of combat, when groups are still mostly separated and the line of fire is clear, always getting a full attack is quite good. Especially at point-blank range, with rapid shot and flat-footed...

What Spells give the DM the most headache...

And spend all their time in the room? I think not. The last time my party used scry+teleport for hit-and-run, the npc was far away from his home and not expecting them to meddle in his affairs right now. So I decided he had no protection up (although he could cast misdirection, I decided he...

What Spells give the DM the most headache...

Scry and Teleport is still pretty bad in 3.5. I can't really justify each villain to have access to counter magic or items that prevent scrying. But since neither have the PCs, I can always hit them back the same way. However, this vastly changes the way the game is being played to a strategical...

Gaaa!!!! I need a Low Magic System!!!!

One quick fix is to disallow clerics, wizards, and all other classes that focus mainly on spellcasting. This way, spells have to come from bards, rangers, and paladins only, as well as certain prestige classes. There is virtually no re-tooling involved prior to the game, although you have to...

Single defining item of power vs. a dozen minor charms and trinkets

Agreed. And it gets worse if you start the game with mid-to-high level PCs and let players buy gear instead of having to find/earn it. For my current campaign, where everybody started at level 10, I told them to not sweat the small stuff and buy something big and memorable, but did they listen...

    hackmaster

I haven't played it yet, but promised some people to run a HM game for fun. And what I gather from reading the books so far, the above hits the nail on the head: there is an enormous amount of bookkeeping and tracking of minutiae involved for the GM. Less so for the players. Plus, the rules are...

    Burial Rights for Adventurers

Page 2 and no one has done it, oh well... [spelling nazi mode] You meant burial rites, didn't you?[/spelling nazi mode] When I read the thread title I thought it would be about who in the party gets to bury the dead guy. Something about clerics of different religions maybe. Although, reading...

    My poor ickle dwagon!

Eek! Entangled is a condition - either you have it or you don't, you can't be entangled multiple times. Granted, some conditions get worse if you acquire them more than once (fatigued, shaken, etc.) but not entangled. Poor dragon :( :D

Tell players target save DCs or let them sweat?

I don't tell them the first time or the first few times, but if they are targeted by the same effect several times in short order, I eventually tell them (it speeds up play and they have usually guessed it by then). Same with ACs, only here it happens more often that they have to roll vs. the...

Fuzzy Knights: Last One For A While ;)

My sentiments, exactly... But at least we can pass the time debating whether Hama-Estra is lawful or chaotic;)

    An "appropriate" system for LOTR?

I haven't played the Decipher LotR game, but heard good things about it. AFAIK, magic is not easily available, and the powers that you can learn are based more or less on the books. The game mechanics are similar to d20 but using "2d6+adds, roll high". But I disagree that D&D can't do LotR...
