WoTC Gelatinous Cube Mini - Empty or not?

Yeah, see, I think the ochre jelly mini and spider swarm mini's were silly, cause you spend a lot of time inside the mini. I used construction paper with a grid on it.

    Alternatives to stat-boosting items?

I'm not even sure why you want to cost them extra for being inherant bonuses. It's rare enough for a PC to lose a magic item (In my humble game. I project based on discussions about disjunction), that you can almost make a default assumption that magic item bonuses are permanent.

D&D Insider - Pay tomorrow for what you get today for free?

See, this is the thing that boggles me. We never got new material for free on the web. Wait, that's an exageration. I'm know I'm exagerating. We got some adventures of varying quality early on. And spells. And the template classes were new. Previews, which are advertising. Art galleries, also...

D&D Insider - Pay tomorrow for what you get today for free?

This statement is also a little strange. I've found plenty of things, for free, and from secondary publishers, that is balanced (what that means, I don't know), and good. WOTC published plenty of ungood things, and frankly, I don't see what's balanced about the warlock or dragon shaman classes...

D&D Insider - Pay tomorrow for what you get today for free?

Why not? That's the equivalent of a subscription to a Paizo magazine and one MMPORG. If online gaming isn't a MMPORG, it's certainly a MPORG.

D&D Insider - Pay tomorrow for what you get today for free?

Some of it does. I haven't seen you say that this would make wizards bad people, but you've been saying it's a bad idea, based on the idea that the free content is part of what makes DND a sucess. It's true, people love free content. But plenty of people are also saying they don't like the...

Didn't they run that survey several months ago?

D&D Insider - Pay tomorrow for what you get today for free?

I think people might be missing the forest for the trees. They mention a lot of stuff as premium content, but I think what they'll really be selling is the online tools and play table. The rest is dressing. A lot of people have been saying that the websites current information and tools are...

    Half-Ogres & Half-Giants ?!?

I just use ogres. In my home game, I did away with orcs. Ogrillions use ogre stas, and are "half giants." Orcs are Hagrillions (one quarter giantish). Half orcs are Quagrillions (1/8th giantish). Note, none of this is by direct bloodlines. In the twilight years, humans regularly commingled...

    Grim Tales and CR

Hola. I'm thinking of fiddling with my campaign's cosmology, creating new sets of Lawful and Chaotic outsiders. One thing I often have trouble with is estimating CR. Grim Tales was recomended as a good system to calculate CR for a creature. I bought the guidelines and calculator, and it seems...

Monte Cook's Design Thoughts On Spellcasters

The wizard in my current game, who largely refuses to make (or use) magic items and often runs out of appropriate spells, uses his bow in large chunks of combat. Hasn't hit anything for half a year or so. His BAB is too low, and his unmagicked arrows don't pierce damage resistance. The warlock...

    "Metadesign Principles of D&D"

I often have trouble with this in games I run. I use a lot of NPC opponents. Part of the problem here, and I think this is mentioned in the DMG somewhere, is the "back to the dungeon" emphasis. The assumption is that many encounters will be "big game" style, with big dumb beasts that provide a...

DM Schticks That Grind Your Gears

I love it when my PCs try to do something fun. I hate nothing more than PC's starting barfights or rob the local junk store. Dull. Dull. Dull.

Is it time for a low-magic setting?

The flipside of this discussion, as I understand it, is about game management: You want a brand of DND that doesn’t rely to heavily on magic items. Which means you don’t want to award as many magic items in your games. Well, I’m all for GM’s doing what they want with your game. You go. But...

Is it time for a low-magic setting?

Can we back off using phrases like "reactionary" in a post about a role playing game? It's a funny kind of question your asking. You're asking if a low magic setting is needed, and people are answering that it's already there. But no, you say: WOTC needs to publish a generic low fantasy...

But this I gotta ask... who does acrobatics in full plate? Never seen a reference to this, anywhere.

    D&D needs improvement

Yeah, but... y'know. So what? This is the thing. It's not like all those points haven't been debated to death. I'm betting you haven't been playing long. You've probably just got your wind, figured out what you don't like about the game, and you're ready to set everything right. You go, boy...

    Nuclear weapons of D&D Rules

There are two conversations here: what's too mean to do to your characters, and what's too difficult to use at the table. Grapple is a nifty ruleset, and I like that it feels real, but that column made me realize how much time I lost to it in my games. I mean, three levels of rolls for one...
