"Try Castles & Crusades", they say. But no one's playing it!

If only. Publishers don't actually get the full price for a product. For print products sold through game stores, publishers generally get only 40% of the cover price. Distributors get another slice of that and retailers get the rest. This is one reason why a great show like GenCon is such a...

"Try Castles & Crusades", they say. But no one's playing it!

When I was talking numbers, I meant total sales in all channels. There are some titles that can sell over 5,000 in the hobby alone. Yes. This sort of thing can change over time. In the 1990s: yes. In 2000-2003: no. 2004-present: yes.

"Try Castles & Crusades", they say. But no one's playing it!

He means the network of game stores through which most RPG books are sold. The book trade, which is stores like B&N, Borders, and Waldenbooks, is a separate market that works a little differently (the biggest difference being the books are returnable). Most printed RPG stuff is sold in the hobby...

We've kicked off the discussion about the Limited Edition Bleeding Edge Adventure. In case you missed it, we're doing an adventure you'll only be able to get direct from GR as part of our Freelance Fundraiser. We're going to publish the book next year and we want to hear the preferences of folks...

The OGL, The SRD, and a "New Breed" of Games...

If a game uses the OGL, it's already open. What you seem to be talking about is companies giving away their rules and trademarks for free. That is something else entirely. People often get confused on this point, thinking that companies that want to control their own trademarks are somehow not...

    Can o' worms- opinions sought

I think self-nominations are OK, as they encourage new people to throw their hats in the ring. As I mentioned earlier, I'd just limit this to products with the d20 logo. While I agree with Psion that there are a lot less of these than their used to be, it seems like there still should be...

    [Skull & Bones] Naval Combat

I don't know who you talked to, but neither of those things is true. Skull & Bones is in print and in fact I brought extra to GenCon because of Pirates 2. It's also available as a PDF on GR.com and rpgnow.

    Can o' worms- opinions sought

That's an easy fix then. Right now the award specifies d20 and OGL. If you make the award d20 only, that'll take care of it, since you can't have a complete game with the d20 logo on it.

    Gen Con Reports?

I must also thank Truthseeker. He came by the GR booth Saturday morning and gave me a bottle of Johnnie Walker Black Label in honor of our ENnies wins. It was much appreciated and with Nicole in the office it will not go to waste. Thanks, Truthseeker!

    Hats off to Green Ronin

Thanks, all. We figured we had zero chance to win Best Publisher this year, so that was one hell of a surprise. I gotta say, I'm still a little stunned by the whole thing.

[Green Ronin] Pirate Booty Added to Freelancer Fundraiser

Arrgggh, I just realized that I'm a liar. There are things in the print book that aren't the PDFs. There are two short interludes, one between Death and Terror and one between Terror and Madness. The first one (Swagfest) used to be a free adventure on our website but the second one was written...

    D&D 4E Will 4E be announced?

You have to remember that WotC is a big company and thus has a hierarchy. Usually the senior guys get the cherry projects. It's certainly possible to earn your way on to the big projects, but in my experience that's totally based on the work you do once you are at WotC. What you did previous to...

Text wise, the PDFs and the book are the same. We did redo the maps and get some new art for the 5 Year Anniversary book though.
