Spellcraft and Command activated magic items?

From the SRD: ID a spell after suceeding at a save or one that is in place If the item was used on the person making the skillcheck, they could ID it depending on the check result etc. Using Detect Magic as the item is used will allow the school to be ID'ed, and possibly the spell. But you...

    Games-n-Fun in New Zealand?

I know it's just me but: You mean that someone's first visit outside North America will include visiting America?  ;)

    Perform check question

I'd say that could qualify. But i'd make a distinction detween an instant classic and something that would be classic a bit in the future. I think "classic" would have a different meaning than how it is used today. Ask the DM (if that is not you) about what higher DCs give you. At what stage...

    Complicated maps

I would, and have used similar. One way to handle this is that the DM becomes the default party mapper. Use a a piece of paper and trace the map out as the players explore, then show them what they see. It does not need to be exact, only good enough not to mislead the players. Not every...

    Bard resources, discussions

I think the player needs to have a focus on what he wants to do in combat. A bard has a support role, they are not a strait up fighter or sneak attacking rogue or a damaging spellcaster. It is just not their nature to do HP damage themselves. The main options are probably: pepper spellcasters...

    This legal by RAW?

Could you tell me how he summons the fiendish apes (summon III) given that the caster can supposedly cast only summon II spell? And the aspect of Bahumat? Cameron, neither of the spells you mention are called Phastial Killer. Aleolus can you confirm what the spell DungeonMaester is talking...

    Using Spellcraft to ID Spells...

Given this, would you not need to consider: Spontaneous casters? hit them with a further negative because they haven't learnt anything like the wizard or been granted understanding like the cleric. Spells on both the divine and arcane spell lists. casters native to other regions (planes)/with...

    Rope Trickiness

As the others have said: climb the rope into the pocket, no rope means no entry. Consider it in this way: The rope allows you to climb an otherwise unclimbable wall to enter a room via a window.

    This legal by RAW?

I second this call. Make the player show where everything comes from: books, pages, quote the source. If there is a list of sources, make sure that this is being followed. Have the player go through the rules and explain them so that others can check as well Be sure that the DM is aware of your...

    Can you disbelieve Displacement?

This would be a case of the specific over ruling the general. You follow the WILL save to disbeleive a glamer, UNTIL there is a specific instance that this is not the case, such as the Displacement.

    Freedom of Movement underwater?

Hhhmmm. To me the walk at 1/2 speed seems to imply the hindered movement in water, which FoM would remove. But using the same logic, swiming would still be 1/4  since it isn't a "normal" mode of movement (no swim speed as such). Maybe we should just have the character drown? :(

    Looking for good multiclass warrior-type

If permitted the Tactical Soldier PrC from miniatures Handbook might be worthwhile for you. It's a support style Prc that is still a warrior type (it can choose the sqaure it is considered flaking from, protect others, plus more). Otherwise it depends on what you want for your other abilities...

    Invisibility and Light Source

I would think that initially you are correct, but most adventurers (PC & NPC) are savvy enough to realise something is going on and specifically look for the centre of the lit area, especially if the lit area moves around. It'll take guesswork and maybe a spot check, but you could say: That's...

    Freedom of Movement underwater?

I think without the "and move" part would to some mean that your speed is still impeded in water. Afterall, you don't have to move to get 1 or more attacks. Consider this: given the above comment, could you charge? But I agree that the whole thing could have been worded better.

    One Handed Melee Reach Weapon?

To come at it spellwise: The Magic of Faerun 4th level spell Thunderlance creates a huge longspear that is weilded in one hand giving the caster a natural reach of 20 feet plus other abilities. Your DM might/may/probably not :p allow a magic items that uses the spell.

    OotS #470

Okay, I'll accept that. I stuffed up. But it indicates something else. That was how many V wanted, not the total that V could cast the spell on (granted it is likely that 13 was all V could effect). DogBackward suggest a limiting factor of how big the breach is. Maybe. We still don't...

Starting at 1st level with a higher group

Provided that someone had enough research or thoughts about someone using fireball in the near future. That is not something that is always available. And given the number of area of effect fire/cold/acid/electricity/sonic/force spells there are, that is a lot of ground to cover. Not thinking...

    OotS #470

I'm not so possitive with that. Mass bull's Strenght has an area of effect limitation, regardless of the caster's level. It is possible if unlikely that there were only 13 within the area of effect.

    Freedom of Movement Definitive Answer

When it doesn't say one way or another, we are left with extrapolating (and to be terribly pedantic: water generally is not magical). My answer followed what I considered to be the intent of the spell without greatly changing the power level. *shrug* I don't have a definative answer, only...
