    Conceptualize the Paladin

The thing is, Chivalry itself already encompasses that faith in its tenants, historically speaking. The "true knight" was a warrior and defender of the (Catholic) Church.

Forked Thread: Healing Surges: Let's see them in Action!

I think the idea is that McClain had a diminishing resource of "health/stamina" that he had to be smart about expending in combat over the course of his "adventure." There are moments in the film where he rests briefly, though, so perhaps that can be explained as healing surges. I haven't played...

    Eliminating Eastern Flavor From D&D?

aside: The United States has never had a civil war. A civil war is where two or more factions fight for control of the government. The Confederacy wasn't trying to take over or rule the United States, it wanted to separate. England, however, has had a civil war, fought between cavaliers and...

    Eliminating Eastern Flavor From D&D?

And you're right. That said, gold dragons and the entire concept of good-aligned dragons comes from the Orient. In the West, dragons are generally evil or even demonic beings.

    Eliminating Eastern Flavor From D&D?

In the original Monster Manual, the Gold Dragon has the genus Draco Orientalus Sino Dux, and the illustration is of an oriental serpentine dragon.

    Eliminating Eastern Flavor From D&D?

So where does the Oriental Express travel to now? :) I'm aware of the PC/Ministry of Truth spin on it. When precision is needed in serious matters, such as police reports describing a suspect's description, "oriental" is used, not "far eastern" or "Asian." There's no slur involved. Even in less...

    Eliminating Eastern Flavor From D&D?

I would hazard to say he means what is properly referred to as Oriental, not just "Asian." By that standard, near-east cultural influences (Middle-east, Byzantium, Russian, Persian, but probably not Indian) would fit in.

Magic deadly to the caster and allies

Managing risk is inherently more "fun" than point and click abilities. Even when you as the player aren't consciously aware of it.

The name you're looking for is "Papers & Paychecks."

    George Washington, you mean.

The end of all edition wars?

For war consisteth not in battle only, or the act of fighting, but in a tract of time, wherein the will to contend by battle is sufficiently known: and therefore the notion of time is to be considered in the nature of war, as it is in the nature of weather. For as the nature of foul weather...

    Sign of Things to Come?

In older editions, they did; that is, when taken as a whole with the period of resting necessary over several days to recover hit points as natural healing.

    Sign of Things to Come?

You should totally make food capable of restoring hit points. Then also make sure there is spoiled/cursed food that hurts their characters if they are incautious. By the way, if they were novices to D&D, how did they know they had "low hit points" . . ?

Tucker's Kobolds -- really that tough a challenge?

You're exactly right. This is part of the very social make-up of a role-playing game and why it is both impossible and unnecessary to make universal rules that govern every group of players using the system. The DM makes rulings and so on with the (tacit or explicit) consent of the players. It's...

Tucker's Kobolds -- really that tough a challenge?

I agree with this. The DM should be an impartial participant. In fact, the good DM is secretly rooting for the players to win. But it ain't gonna be easy, cupcake.

Tucker's Kobolds -- really that tough a challenge?

Oh god! I remember them! Our party survived because we had a gnome illusionist/psionicist to create illusions and whatnot to trick the kobolds into attacking phantasmal parties and so on. He was the MVP of that adventure by far. That player received mucho extra shares of treasure when all was...

    Adventures for eight-year olds

The plots of the old Endless Quest books such as Pillars of Pentegarn, Return to Brookmere, Mountain of Mirrors, and Dungeon of Dread would make great solo adventures for a young first time player.
