In my opinion, the manner and extent that versions of a game differ in goals, assumptions, and mechanics can make them different games, regardless of the trademarks and other IP involved.
Holbytla have been in my campaign since the beginning 17 years ago, and will remain.
They are generally "Shire" Hobbits, but more like Hobbits after the War of the Ring. The D&D Known World "Halflings of the Five Shires" is also an inspiration.
Human beings* do not have gender. Gender is a grammatical concept (masculine, feminine, and neuter). Human beings have sex: male or female [/nitpick]
*and demi-humans, etc. etc.
I don't have 4D&D yet, but perhaps those who miss certain race/classes that were excluded can take this opportunity to go "back to the basics," so to speak with the new edition. That's how I'd likely look at it.
I loved the original planar cosmology as a beautiful synthesis of mythology, literature, science-fiction, and other sources.
The new cosmology is fine, too.
The purpose of any game is to challenge the players. Characters don't exist. They are the playing pieces manipulated by the players. "Character abilities" may be leveraged for advantage, but it is for the players' advantage, as it is the players' skill that is ultimately tested.

Well said! I heartily agree. The GM is better equiped to tailor his rulings to the tastes, expectations, and other unique circumstances of the playing group/campaign than slavish adherence to what a designer came up with.
