Would it be mean for me to have Potions of Inflict Serious Wounds as treasure?

What about some Sovereign Glue stored in a potion bottle :-)

    My "Thieves Guild" Campaign

Not all the members of a Thieves Guild need to spend their time actively "thieving" (opening locks, picking pockets, etc) Fighters/Barbarians could be the hired muscle in protection rackets and such. Wizards/Sorcerers could identify stolen magical items. Or use Nystul's Magical Aura for scams...

Running the Freeport Trilogy - Advice and Opinions Wanted

I played in (not DM'd) a Freeport campaign. To answer Olaf's questions: 1. We didn't bother about where Freeport was located in a wider world, our whole campaign stayed in and around the city. 2. Both as players and as characters we began the campaign knowing zero about the city, other than...

    Fighter with spells

Per the SRD, you can play a cleric without following any god. Just pick whatever 2 domains best fit your character. IMHO a fighter/cleric is more similar in style to a paladin than a fighter/sorcerer and you don't have to worry about Arcane Spell Failure.

    Random Encounters

Within our group we have 2 camps - one loves random encounters (and random treasure), the other hates them. So whether they're used in one of our campaigns depends which camp any given DM is from. I personally hate them. To me it detracts from the "story" and instead focusses the players...

Just checking... how many times have your players died?

My group is actually clever/sad* enough to keep track of PC deaths in Excel. We call it our Death Chart. We use regular PHB rules only, except you die at -Con not -10. So for example, our most homicidal DM has taken us through 3 campaigns set in Kalamar. Kalamar1, 28 deaths in 40 sessions...

    My "Thieves Guild" Campaign

Hi there Right when DnD v3 was released I DM'd a campaign with all the PCs being "thieves". The campaign was set in the City of Greyhawk and they were all members of the Thieves Guild. Not all PCs had levels in rogue though. I found our old session writeups, which may be of interest...

Do the PCs follow the same rules as everyone else?

In my games, PCs are kind of special compared to NPCs. We generally use PHB only and PCs must properly obey the character creation rules. (having had bad experience of imbalance when experimenting with e.g. v3 splat books, Savage Species, unrestricted use of PrCs, etc - but that's a topic for a...

What do you NEED in a starting town?

Don't forget the first 2 laws of Dungeoncraft: 1. Never force yourself to create more than you must; and 2. Whenever you fill in a major piece of the campaign world, always devise at least one secret related to that piece. BTW there's an archive of those great old Dungeoncraft columns...

What's the best trap you've ever unleashed upon your players?

This isn't a trap I DM'd, instead it was one that caught me out as a player. It's not so much the trap itself which was memorable as the metagame circumstances. We were playing a campaign set in Freeport and were down in the sewers searching for a hidden area. We found a secret door and when we...

MP Chaos Magic - non-level 1 starting characters

Hi there As was pointed out to me by a friend recently, the Chaos Mage class is one that can only reasonably be played right through from 1st level. But what if you need to make one at e.g. 5th level, as an NPC or a new but experienced PC? There's no easy way you could realistically figure out...

prestige domains - virtually impossible to get?

thanks Thanks for all the replies, I'm at least reassured that I hadn't completely misread the book and that Prestige Domains really are that hard to get hold of. Luke

prestige domains - virtually impossible to get?

The Defenders of the Faith (DotF) book lists some 14 new "prestige" domains but, unless I'm missing something, they're practically impossible to gain access to? I've looked through all the prestige classes in DotF and come up with the following list of ones that give you a prestige domain. So...

Mongoose - Hat's off (Chaos Magic)

Errors in examples? I got the Chaos Magic book last week and like the system. My only gripe is that there were only two examples of creating a spell and both appeared to have errors in, unless I'm missing something? The DC for a minor movement effect is 15, but the first example uses a minor...
