    Expertise justification?

Exactly! At least that's what I'd do as DM. The only time when players may think their characters underpowered is when compared to the other PCs, as the DM can vary monster stats to fit the party. What this IMO boils down to is the distinction between players who optimize their characters to...

    Expertise justification?

With that far a gap between our respective ideas about how to enjoy this game, we won't reach a common ground. You go ahead and optimize away!

    Expertise justification?

Why would someone who plays a non-optimized character take the arguably most imbalanced feat? Non-optimization doesn't stop at ability score assignment, you know. I can think of tons of feats more interesting, chellenging, or useful than a to-hit-bonus. I don't know which logical fallacy that...

    PHB3 cover!

Yey, just what we need: more divine classes! And races already presented in the MM! And what's that I hear, Martial Power 2? Is this ever going to stop? ... Sorry to be ants at the picnic here, but this whole schtick of serialized volumes (PH 1,2,3,n) really bothers me. It seems to me that...

The 3 Core Books plus THIS ONE BOOK are all you can use to game--What's the one book?

Exactly my choice. That or the ExPsHb. Coming to think of it, my favourite books are the ones covered in the SRD...

    Question about a d20 Ranger

There are no lame questions. As I see it, "shapechanger" is just another subtype of the humanoid type, and thus a viable option for the ranger's favored enemy. It's not included in the table PHB pg. 47, but since that list covers ALL types, it should be amended.

    Inconsistant/Arbitrary rules...

I see...makes sense. But since the whole paragraph is mainly concerned with attacking, I would never have thought of this referring to HD.

Elegant Rules (Forked From: Inconsistant/Arbitrary rules...)

I'm with you on the second, but not on the first. They tried too hard to make it balanced that the final system eliminates anything that sets the classes apart mechanically, i.e. good AC/REF for Rogue-type characters. Now, everyone is like "I've got no DEX, but that's okay, because I've got...

    Inconsistant/Arbitrary rules...

This just shows that you can justify it either way. And if that's possible, you might as well streamline it, IMO. ...and was that a step forward from earlier editions! I vaguely remember mental attack bonus (MTHAC0) and mental armor class. IIRC, the numbers were so off that a psionicist could...

    Inconsistant/Arbitrary rules...

I agree with your reasoning, it probably less arbitrary than it is inconsistent. Still, why have a fixed d% chance when it's all a matter of perception? Why make hitting equally hard for everyone, regardless of Listen/Spot modifiers? You do get a bonus on hide checks when concealed, why not roll...

    Inconsistant/Arbitrary rules...

...almost forgot the big one in 3E: concealment. It's arbitrary and inconsistent. Why attack/defence modifiers for cover, but not concealment? Less arbitrary, but just as annoying: arcane spell failure, or any d% rolls for that matter. If you only have +/-5%-increments anyway, you might as well...

Kudos to everyone, this thread is a blast to read! My favourite so far: ... Damnation, you're right. I'll houserule that in straight away!

Do fantasy and paganism go together, or should they stay separate?

You make fantasy without Christianity, they call it paganism. You make fantasy with Christianity, they call it heresy. Either way, the Christian Right always has its Golden Calf to dance around.

Forked Thread: Twilight of the Warlocks

I'm under the impression that strikers were originally designed to weasel around the enemy, sometimes even ahead of the defenders. That's what prime shot is for. Having said that, it's of course doubtful to give an ability like this to a class that operates on ranged attacks and gets thrown a...

    Expertise justification?

Imagine it were a feat bonus and you had already spent a couple of feats on circumstantial +1 attack boons. Boy would you be mad... I really wonder why expertise had to be a heroic tier feat, especially vis-a-vis the NAD-boosts in PHB1. As was said before, the math can't possibly be that...

    Removing 3.X Iterative Attacks (Suggestions)

I do it like that, with the exception that characters need feats (double/triple attack) to get addional attacks. These have BAB requirements. If you think this is too harsh on the fighters (feat tax and all), hand those out as bonus feats at appropriate levels.

    Saves vs defenses

I see quite a paradigm shift here, especially with regard to spells: Whereas before your spells were automatically successful, unless your target succeeded in its save, now the spell/power is successful, only if you succeed in your attack. Mechanically and probabilitywise it's the same, but it...

    Base Hitpoints: Containing the Ripple.

I like Saga Edition's approach very much, what with damage threshold and condition monitor and all. That said, the higher number of HP Characters get are offset by the increased damage weapons dish out. For my house rules, I thought of combining VP/WP and condition monitor, but that won't work...
