    Let's write some riddles!

Thank you! Unfortunately I can't XP you. How hard would you rate this puzzle/riddle?

    Let's write some riddles!

Why is this riddle too hard for everyone? You have four switches: A black one, a brown one, a white one, and a grey one. You have to press the right switch in order to open a secret door. If you press a wrong one, Bad Things will happen. In front of the switches you have a plaque that says: A...

A new campaign (now with play report)

Well, IMO it's always interesting to have human races. Greyhawk is brilliant with this: Most of the humans are of mixed stock and require no further explanation. Few are clearly of some specific race. I don't think you have to be really complicated with this. In my opinion these would be...

    Would you houserule these things?

Well, personally I like Ahnenoi's and Crothian's ideas: Any profession is more than just the Profession skill and having common ground with other professionals can help you. I wouldn't houserule any of the things mentioned in the OP. But that's just me. I might be tempted though :)

so how often do you go above 10th level?

Never. Longer answer: Once my group had two 10th-level characters, one 9th-level character and one 8th-level character. This was the highest they could get. We are still playing in the same campaign (although there was a huge reset recently) and now we have one 8th-level character, two...

    Would you houserule these things?

Out of curiosity, I'd like to know how many of you are willing to houserule things that aren't specifically covered in the rules but don't necessarily need any houserules for the game to work. I've chosen a list of things that occasionally provoke DMs to make bunch of houserules according to...

    2012 PC Bodycount thread

A no-holds barred illegal gladiator tournament full of intrigue, betting, controversy and exotic fighters. It proved to be a bit too deadly for my players :( Before the tournament I specified one of the NPC-gladiators as a very dangerous opponent. He was the smallest of the gladiators, a happy...

How roleplay the use of bluff skill - delivering a secret message?

I'm the game that I'm running a certain NPC will hint that one of the referees in a gladiator tournament is (easily) bribable. This is a DC 15 Bluff check. I find roleplaying this really hard so I was thinking about this: "Your friend suddenly talks all kinds nonsense about weather and her cat...

    Strongest racial animosity in D&D?

Of all the intelligent races, which ones have the strongest hatred toward one another? IMHO Gith*-Illithid animosity wins hands down. But are there any other races with comparable hatred? *Githzerai/Githyanki

I spend way too much on RPG's.

I think I have spent less than 30 dollars on RPGs. I've bought some dice and the old Runequest boxed set. If you need to have some consultation, please PM me. It's really easy though: Just don't buy it.

Have you ever played "Join me in the dark side" type of campaigns?

One of the players made a Chaotic Neutral Barbarian. In his (the PC's) first and last battle he got everyone killed, including the surviving squire, by rushing in gung-ho and the party was split in a hopeless battle against relatively easy opponents. The player had worked really hard to make his...

Have you ever played "Join me in the dark side" type of campaigns?

Have you ever played campaigns where the players were meant to be heroes but were corrupted by outside influences? Evil campaigns where everyone starts from the "dark side" don't count. IME these sort of games are rare. During my 10 years of gaming I haven't played in any so I decided to have...

    Optimal number of players?

I'd say it depends on the players. Quiet, cooperative and humble players. I'd take 5 of those. Maybe even 6. Talkative, neurotic and confrontational players. Ideal would be 3... 4 maximum. Of course you might ask "why would you play with that sort of players". Well, sometimes they are like this...

101 small details to liven up your game a bit (mostly for GMs)

    1. Nicknames. We all have nicknames, right? IMO it's not chaotic or evil if a high-priest of Heironeous calls his favorite cousin Erriadonus the White Paladin as "Err" (not in front of the acolytes, of course). 2. Have NPCs interrupt each other. Long monologues are... well, long monologues. It's...

    Fudging is not your friend

I have never fudged. All non-secret rolls are made in front of the players on the table. Basically I don't even have a DM screen. I like having the role of a neutral referee in a game of challenge and danger. Whatever happens, happens because of the dice and player decisions. The game doesn't...

National Symbols: Uncle Sam's foriegn counterparts?

I hope I'm not too boring if I link you this? Personally I'd choose King of Palmares over the Effigy of the Republic as the national personification of Brazil because it represent freedom and struggle for independence whereas the Effigy represent the Republic and is shared with Portugal. But my...

Players that are only interested about their characters

Lots of good advice so far, thank you! It's great to know that I'm not the only one in this sort of situation. It means that if I know for sure that they are going to talk to someone (such as the prisoners they are trying to release) I have the opening word, thank-yous etc. already written. I...

Players that are only interested about their characters

Recently I've noticed that my players only talk about their characters' game mechanical abilities. They talk about how much damage they can inflict per round and how powerful they will be and what sort of builds do they want. I've noticed that they never talk about the game-world or any...

    Just need 20 more xp!

In such cases I usually give some XP in advance. It means that you get some XP now, but it will be deducted from your future XP. I'm always very precise with XP (mistakes occur, but rarely) so I don't like to do that quite often. Once there was a PC with just one XP away from the 9th level. I...

    2012 PC Bodycount thread

My 3.5 campaign was getting completely out of hand. Well, the good news is that it ended and we will now start something new. The sad thing is that the campaign that lasted 73 session and three years ended in an extremely unclimactic way. Since there has been too many PC-deaths lately, I...
