Do your PCs ever completely outclass the enemy?

I always try to give the players a couple "show off" encounters during an adventure. An encounter that they can really show off their powers and ace. They like it. It also makes up for the occaisional fight that goes bad (rolling or tactics or whatever). -E

    In-Character versus Out-Of-Character

Mostly OOC: DM: 10% IC (character being NPCs)- mostly descriptions and adjudication Players: 25% IC- mostly 3rd person, clarification and description of action- the remaining % is the conversation. We allow some jokes and allow some "take backs" to recouch statements or allow somethings not...

    Dungeon #130

I'm sad that the descriptions for 3 locations were left out of Palace of Plenty. I also think they should have called it Amata Goten. I think it might be my favorite recent Dungeon adventure inspite of the omissions. It is not Rokugan specific (just Oriental Adventure flavored). I started...

    Traveller or Star Frontiers?

I don't know which is more popular. I will post the results of a google fight below, that is my arbiter of online popularity. I would guess traveller. I played both. I preferred Traveller and so did some of my players. We ended up modifying both rule sets to increase the fun factor, so...

official modules only in rpga - why?

Dungeon Magazine's adventures are now often RPGA compliant. They have points and everything. Dungeon's adventures are usually good. That would be my solution... if the GM doesn't have a subscription, I might chip in as a group and get it for him. -E

Dungeons & Dragons Lite: Am I the Only One?

We usually run with the 3 core plus one setting book (3.0 or 3.5... right now 3.5). Anything else is probably imported by the DM: monsters or adventures mainly, sometimes other sources import flavor: here are the things the dm has imported from recently: Dungeon Magazine and because of that...

    Best Setting Books?

Favorite Setting books ever- semi-chronological order: Planescape- hmmm.. tough to go with one, but the original box set is available PDF, I'd add dead gods and the infinite staircase for adventure flavor. The original box is great. The artwork is inspired, the text is fitting, and at the...

DM overruling a Player's play of his character

I agree with Pogre. and I stack on the reward for roleplaying well. If play smacks too much of metagaming, or if I'm gritting my teeth over something like that, then I just don't reward that player. I don't punish, I just give out XP here, XP there for good play. Positive reward works better...

How did you learn to GM?

Trial and error. I was a player for a while first (a year maybe?) and then the DM wanted to play, so I DM'd. I was terrible. I did learn from my mistakes (more slowly then, I was 10 or 11 or so). Eventually during the next year, I got to begginer GM state- knowing the rules, and able to...

Sorry - I think the point was missed...

I thought Lords of Darkness would be like that: A flavorful NPC book. I thought in the Zentarim section it would have NPC Zent Fighters, Wizard, and Cleric samples for levels 1 to 20, human for Zents. It could have even had one for every other level. Then in the section for Drow, they would...

    Sweet old Twilight 2000

I bought a copy and read t:2000 when it came out. I didn't like it as much as AD&D, but I got a couple different people to play it. Once with the D&D group for a change of pace and a couple times with some basically non-rpg types that just like wargames. I remember it being a really...

What do you do if your DM gets sick...

was it Iocaine powder? -E apparently any good dm that wants to put baby in a corner needs to develop an immunity to Iocaine powder.

    Humbling defeats

The roper bit it against the party I mentioned above. It didn't have enough mobility to get away from the mage who direct damaged it to death as soon as he knew what it was. The mage directed everyone else to stay away from it and shower it with missile weapons. In spite of tearing through...

    Humbling defeats

might have been ;) I bet wizards got a dozen similar reports: Forge of Fury is fun. Bears now exceedingly dangerous. I'm glad to hear that the bear in forge of fury is one of those shared experiences of 3E. heheheh. -E

    Humbling defeats

Brown Bear eats adventurers Ahhh yesteryear.... My group playtested 3E, Forgotten Realms and Forge of Fury (and a few other things). Forge was their first expeditition into 3E besides some scratch paper vs fights for CR (like pitting a regular 1st level party against a CR 1 for testing the...

How do you prepare/run your game...

This thing is sweet, but even sweeter, if you are on a Mac is voodoo pad. The full version is worth paying the 25$, but voodoo pad lite which is free is still sweet! I looked into this stuff when you or somebody else mentioned it in a thread. -E

San Diego - good OOP game stores?

Game Empire has a used games book shelf (it is in clairemont a subdivision that is a 30 minute drive from down town). This is not typically the place you will find the mint copy of B3 to round out your collection, you will likely find 90% crap and one gem. And the gem will be something like a...

Anyone else find it annoying to figure out skills for NPCs?

Suggestions: 1) published adventures. You may spend some time bending fluff things to fit (names of towns, etc), but the crunchy bits are done for you. 2) don't make anything you don't need. Many people already stated this in the thread. Unless the NPC is bound for combat with the PCs, you...

    Dungeon Masters Guide II????

I see Robin D. Laws is attached. I hope he covers some of the same ground from Robin's Laws of Good Gaming. I'd like to see some instant use stuff, as a DM instant NPC's and instant stats are useful crunch. And some DM oriented fluff, like RLoGG's advice on how to be a better DM and run a...
