Pathfinder 1E So the question is... why is pathfinder selling so well?

I think Paizo does the one thing a LOT of gamers have a hard time with, and that's making compelling adventures. So those are in high demand. And the rules that support those adventures sell because you need them. And Pathfinder (like 3.x before it) is pretty good at anything up to 10th level...

    Dming Controllers

I've heard that, but the ones I've seen in person haven't been overwhelming. It may be a table mindset. PS

    Dming Controllers

I think my group is running without a controller right now. They never seemed to be particularly impressive to me. Maybe my group doesn't know how to build one, or maybe my encounters don't reward them well enough. PS

    1st Level Wizard Defenses

Yeah, but he took all ranged attack powers. The only part of this PC that says "in your face" is his AC. Hence my question. With the powers he picked he'd be better off with a wand - which is totally contrary to his build (no DEX, AC priority, etc). I say "rethink!" PS

    1st Level Wizard Defenses

Is this just a character building exercise? Is there some reason you need a 20 AC? In general 4e tends to work better when every class sticks to their schtick. So maximize the secondary effects on your powers, make sure your NADs are pretty good (and as even as you can get) and let your friends...

    Favorite Setting That Has Novels

Ooooh. That's a good answer! I had forgotten about those. I really liked some of those stories. PS

When to allow players to change out characters

I'm probably the most spineless DM ever. My players don't even need to tell me when they rebuild the same PC with different stats/powers/feats/whatever (every session? whatever). I do like a little notice when they change PCs completely, but again they can do that whenever they want...

Do you always need to save the world

I like eventually getting to save the world. You don't start there, and you don't get close to there until your PCs have a ton of history, connections, and power. But eventually your PCs (assuming a long running D&D campaign) get to high level and can throw down with extraplanar incursions and...

    Dungeons?

I, obviously, don't have quite the restrictive definition you do. But if my outdoor encounter map has 6 squares with trees and 4 squares with rocks and the rest of ~400 squares are open terrain, that's not a dungeon. Since I have those pretty regularly, I'm not pushing 100%. PS

    Dungeons?

I would consider that to be 1) a dungeon, and 2) a pretty sweet map. PS

D&D 5E Are you happy with the Battlemaster and Fighter Maneuvers? Other discussions as well.

I had a limited set of players yesterday, so a lot of skills were used untrained. Went fine. Almost the entire session was a "skill challenge" (I run them extensively modified), and I told the players the easy/moderate/hard DC and let them choose which to roll against, with the knowledge that...

    Dungeons?

Heh. Yesterday's session had a trip to the dungeon! The local "king" had stashed his treasure chest in the dungeon of his newly acquired manor house. It had a central room with oubliette, and 7 cells. The group killed the guards, broke into the cell with the treasure chest, and activated it...

    Dungeons?

I put down 41-50. My PCs are goblins, so the first few adventures were securing their cave environment - all dungeons. Then they raided rival clans - all dungeons. Then they moved to Sharn and had a series of urban adventures, probably half of which were indoor, and qualified for dungeon at...

Tell Us Of Your Game Settings

LOL. In 30+ years of gaming I've never once thought about how worms interact with a setting's magic system. :D PS

Tell Us Of Your Game Settings

Good question! Does magic ever fully disappear? I can imagine somewhere out beyond the edges of the map a group of adventurers finds an abandoned civilization - one that used to have maps of their local area - that has "regressed" back to magic. In practice I would think the technology level...

Tell Us Of Your Game Settings

I've had a new setting idea bubbling up in my head for a while. It's not fully fleshed out, and I haven't gamed in it yet. I'm thinking it might use O.L.D is N.E.W. as it's system. We'll see. The central idea is that knowledge, and particularly recorded knowledge pushes back magic. Technology...

Drawmij: Honestly, how long did it take you?

In my Eberron game every elf is supposed to be a complete badass. (the PCs are goblins) Elves are also smug and superior and annoying. So the only elf they've met on the battlefield so far was Pusod (Precious, Unique Snowflake Of Death). :D PS

Pros and Cons of Epic Level Play?

Pros and Cons of Epic Level Play?

Ha! "You must spread some Experience Points around before giving it to Manbearcat again." I admit I often have to read what you write a couple times to get it, but it's usually worth it. This post, however, is pure gold. :D PS
