Why is the shortest lived edition, still one of the most popular?

I am referring to what is called in OSR nomenclature, B/X, basically the version of D&D rules that came in a 1981 Basic Boxed set by Tom Moldvay and Expert Boxed set by Dave Cook and Steve Marsh. It was superseded in 1983 by a new Basic version by Frank Mentzer, with later Expert, Companion...

Boundless: An Excerpt From The Upcoming Drizzt Novel

I think in some novels, you can see the influence of the rules system. For instance, some of the Pathfinder novels have an alchemist as the main character, which has some pretty unique class abilities. And now that I think about it, the original Drizzt was able to fight with two scimitars...

Pathfinder 2E What Would You Want from PF2?

Personally, I would not want a PF2e, so much as a Pathfinder Light. I would like to see a Pathfinder more akin to older editions D&D. While 5e does hearken back in some ways, it radically changes things that even 3e didn't, like the range for armor class and to hit (ie, the whole bounded...

    White Dwarf Reflections #3

I'm a bit surprised that anyone would have to look up the name, she was such a huge contributor to gaming in the early days.

Grogbards, Tell Me Stories of Greyhawk

It depends on what you mean by canonical. Gary Gygax actually blew up the setting in one of his post TSR Gord the Rogue Novels (Come Endless Darkness) But really, he never really meant it to be a setting. He was initially even puzzled by the idea that people wouldn't want to create their own...

Release The Sunken Temple of Chloren-Var Adventure Module

I am curious why, with all the open systems available, you went with a generic format that makes it difficult for anyone to use? It my experience, it's much harder to convert from a supposed system neutral format than one from a different system, at least if I am familiar with that system. And...

Has Paizo ever talked about releasing their adventures in 5E format?

I don't think it's resentment, they just feel that supporting 5e would damage the Pathfinder brand in the long term. Especially now, when they are trying to launch PF2. Why would anyone buy that if they supported 5e? They want to lock people into their ecosystem, not become part of WOTCs

It's Not A Cartoon, But What Is It?

I played V&V back in the day, but I think it's popularity was quickly usurped by Champions and Marvel Super-Heroes, both of which I played more. There's something of an urban gaming legend about someone doing that in GURPs (besides statting yourself, you'd have all the stuff you had with you...

    OGC Wiki?

I think if anything, the DM's Guild is closer to the d20 System Trademark License. It gives WOTC more control over products, a lot more control than the d20 license did, but also gives more in return than just being able to use a logo and refer to the D&D PHB by name.

    Keep On The Borderline

I think people are kinda overlooking that it was a module written for beginners (and children) when the hobby was new and even fantasy was fairly new as a popular genre. Look at the cover of the new Pathfinder, a new & exciting (apparently for some) take on kobolds by making them like bipedal...

    [Merged] D&D forum renaming thread

I think it can be a bit confusing because just what is D&D? All editions is one things, but what about D&D based games that aren't D&D? The host of 3e spinoffs or the dozens of OSR games that don't have anything to do with D&D? (Though none of those really get much talk here, so kinda a moot point)

    The Fortnite-ification of Everything

Probably the most annoying thing (at least in video game) is that now characters in games always have to dance after winning. It drives me crazy in the two recent Forza games.

OSR Which retroclone/OSR game is closest to AD&D 2E?

For Gold & Glory (not just Gold & Glory) is the only 2e retroclone. People saying Hackmaster and Adventures Dark and Deep are flat out wrong. FG&G is not the most popular retroclone out there, but does have some excellent quality adventure support from the Merciless Merchants. It also is nice...

John Wick Sells 7th Sea to Chaosium

I was kinda hoping this was an April Fool's post. I am really not a fan of his work and hope he doesn't negatively affect Chaosium (which I am a fan of)

Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines 2 announcement trailer

I also think the public perception of vampires have changed since it was first released. They used to be edgy and cool. Now thanks to twilight and a million other vampire romance novels, they are more like something out of a soap opera. And not like Dark Shadows. More like the Eternally Young...

    Creative Anachronisms

I don't think there really can be anachronisms if it's a different world. I mean, while some technology is obviously built on earlier stuff (like you probably wouldn't have jet airplanes without propeller), sometimes it's just people missing something really obvious (like say, stirrups), or a...

OD&D Jon Peterson Shares Aronson's Original OD&D Illusionist

Yeah, the level titles were something seemingly taken from a thesaurus. In Chainmail, it was Seer, Magician, Warlock, Sorcerer, Wizard In OD&D, it was Medium, Seer, Conjurer, Theurgist, Thaumaturgist, Magician, Enchanter, Warlock, Sorcerer, Necromancer, Wizard In AD&D 1e it was...

Momo is Still Not Real (But Memes Are)

I was waiting to get my truck fixed today, and at the auto shop an old lady was telling a relative to make sure he keeps his kids away from Youtube because of Momo I didn't say anything because I used to live in Florida for 5 years and got my fill of arguing with old people then. But it was...

Mind if I pedantically complain that monster manuals butcher myth/folklore/fairytale?

I think I remember you posting this at another site. But basically I think you're missing a few things. Firstly, a lot of stuff is not taken from mythology directly, but from popular fiction or media. The lich, for instance, is from a Gardner Fox story. The Lamia from Clark Ashton Smith, I...

Big Changes in ICv2's RPG Industry Charts, as Pathfinder Drops Off Before 2E's Release!

I dunno. Traveller was always vastly unsuited for Star Wars. In one of their early supplements, they published the stats for Luke Skywalker (as "Young Farmboy" and it basically was "Pilot — 2) Traveller crashed in 1987 because it got killed off and replaced with "MegaTraveller" which wasn't...
