in its present condition. suggesting again that it may be tarnished or battered or ash covered or... not sticking out for obvious collection. if it had been it would have been looted already. or if it had been it would have sent alarms off in all the players heads about it being trapped...

search was based on a d6 for 1edADnD. you can search for more than just secret doors. OD&D(1974) had search too.

in room 14 there are hidden treasures listed too. some players would be scoping the trophies for ingredients for spell components. or to learn about flora and fauna of the area if they aren't residents of hommlet.

plus it gives something for which the referee can build a back story. the silver baton once cleaned reveals an emblem of a long lost noble line of elves... the PCs won't recognize the emblem but can ask around. write a side trek adventure

i would require a success search check. the baton could easily be covered in soot/ash or tarnished from years in a dungeon.

the whole H series is playable with Battlesystem. your General is the 100th lvl guy. they have a dungeon delve available in them if you want to go with an adventuring party of 18th lvl. about on par as a dungeon delve as another module of that era. WG7 Castle Greyhawk.

do you use an initiative system in your campaign? each PC has an init. depending on how complex you want to make the system. i would set it up for an 8 tier. much like the NCAA College basketball system. place an opponent or obstacle in each of the 64 squares. collapse the cards behind them...
