    Help keeping my players alive

Without having been in the campaign it's impossible to be certain but I'd say that players should expect different amounts of encounters between wandering the wilderness and attacking a keep.

PC hit points vs Monster hit points

I don't think it's as simple as you're making out. I don't think there's a magic number you can apply to say this is better than that. In general you'll be facing things that have more hit points than the pcs do, but I don't think that makes (for example) healing more important than damage...

What are the most worthless feats (Heroic)?

From a purely mechanical basis it depends a bit on party composition. If you have a Cleric and Wizard you probably wouldn't take it. If you only have 1 party member with it then you probably would take it so that you have a better chance of somebody being able to cast raise dead after an...

    Fighter Marking

As a fighter if you make an attack roll against a target then you've marked it. I'd need to know what the powers that say that all targets are marked to see why they say that. It may be that the targets don't all have attack rolls against them for the power to have an effect.

    Wearing armor and resting

With standard field armour it's rarely going to have a huge impact on what you can do. It does (apparently) have a fair impact on how long you can do something for. The only real case I have heard of men in armour having huge problems getting up was at Agincourt where the freshly plowed fields...

    Wearing armor and resting

Which is why it's worth considering either having your main armour be summonable (or the enchantment that lets you change it to and from normal clothing) or have a backup set that is summonable and a point or two of enhancement bonus lower

    Lightning attacks and water

I'm not sure this works out too well as a realistic model. Lighting travelling through air versus lightning through water electric eels stun things in water but I don't know of any land animal which does it... Nor do I think it makes a fun game. for simplicity I'd consider +2 to hit and +5...

What are the most worthless feats (Heroic)?

Because there are 3 dailies you might want to use in different circumstances. It might be more attractive when the Arcane splatbook comes out. It's not common. I considered far-shot but with the range on the Greatbow I can't see it as a big issue. Maybe for a hand-crossbow. Far Throw might...

A couple abilities in Martial Power seem WAY too good...

I'm curious to see how you could make it useless. Apart from making encounters with nothing but artillary. a) The game company releases the product and makes the money, hence they wear the blame b) how do you know the play testers didn't make the observations and weren't ignored?

Do improvised weapons count as "wielding a weapon"?

I'd say so. although for powers where he's making multiple attacks he'll need more than 1 and a melee ranger will want 2 table legs.

House Rule - level bonus added to damage?

For scaled a bit higher read +15 versus +6. The game is more or less balanced around the gear people can get and stat increases they can get. If you chuck in another +10 or +15 on top of that it makes a huge difference. What levels have you played it at though? Because often things work fine...

House Rule - level bonus added to damage?

It is, because it hits things much more often than a first level wizard will. Also it has significantly more chance of having damage boosted by feats and other effects. You can't really judge powers without looking at gear. If you've only played 2 sessions I'd hold back on tinkering with...

    Ranger

Twin strike is up there. The Cleric one that gives somebody else a +4 bonus to hit the target in melee is probably the best at will. As an archer ranger it's almost certainly nimble strike.

Are Archer Rangers getting the Shaft?

I think you're confusing two things. Nobody that I can see is claiming that a ranged attacking ranger is weak (some people are saying that their ability to stay at range and not be attacked hurts the party because it means other people take more damage) People are querying whether there's any...

Melee basic attack within X squares - huh?

It's done as a melee attack so that melee classes who are using the weapon have a chance to hit with it rather than whiff air with a dex based attack.

Are Archer Rangers getting the Shaft?

That really depends on the character and the encounter composition. An elven archer ranger who's focused on movement (fast runner, fleet-footed, boots that boost speed) can get a lot of movement - up to 14 squares on a run action, chuck in another 10 squares when you use shot on the run) so...

Are Archer Rangers getting the Shaft?

Note that Defensive Mobility applies against _all_ opportunity attacks and there are times when you will want to retreat more than a shift will get you. Also note that without spending a feat an Archer Ranger gets d10 damage which is what the two weapon ranger can get to with proficiency bastard...

Are Archer Rangers getting the Shaft?

Because you want to play an archer? Because you want to be able to attack anywhere on the board so that you can support people anywhere? Because you want to be able to hang back to provide cover for the wizard while still damaging enemies on the front line or to be able to engage artillary...

Are Archer Rangers getting the Shaft?

Put me down as a counter-example. Elven archer ranger started with 20 dex, 14 wis and 10 str.

    Few ideas for rules.

I'm not sure that realism is ever a particularly good plan for an rpg. It's certainly never been one of D&Ds real selling points. I'm not sure what you mean by separation of classes here. a) I don't think people really want to track which skills they have used at a level. b) I don't think we...
