D&D 4E 4E multiclassing - is Arcane Initiate too powerful?

I'm playing a bow ranger with rogue multi-class and have started carrying a captured crossbow as a backup weapon and for the sneak attack shots.

We had that one back in 2nd ed. although 1.5 l bottles of coke also worked.

    Clarification: Encounter and Daily Powers

It's to stop people wandering around with a wheelbarrow full of magic items with daily usage powers and churning one off all the time.

    Needlefang Drake Swarm Too Powerful?

That's what shifting is for, and some classes can attack and then shift or shift & then attack.

    Comparisions between classes

It depends on the situation. There are benefits and drawbacks to either class as a defender. In general I think a fighter is a more effective defender than a Paladin. The fighter a) gets to attack people who attack somebody other than him (for at least similar damage to the Paladin if he...

    Comparisions between classes

Depends on chance to hit. If you've got a 20 dex & a longbow then a [W] + dex with Weapon Focus does D10 + 6 damage average 11.5 damage on a hit Twin strike does D10 + 1 per hit Average 6.5 damage/hit If you have a 50% chance of hitting then the average in a round is single attack -> 5.75...

    Dual weilding javelins?

Well it does mean that a two weapon Ranger hits at short ranges as well as an archer ranger without putting anything into into dex. So you make a combined melee and ranged attacker significantly cheaper (admittely you are doing a couple points less average damage at range) Whether it's an...

Player just doing the same thing problem- please help.

Yeah, I should have been clearer in what I wrote. iirc the original post in this thread said that the cleric was more of a tank than anything else so I took that to mean he was a strength based cleric. In which case I'd expect him to have better bonuses to hit in melee than an archer ranger...

    Most powerful, flexible party

It's not so much the healing that the Warlords boost party strength with, it's the buffs. I haven't had an indepth look at the Warlord yet but I suspect that they do more for groups with melee strikers than ranged strikers so you might not get great synergy for your party. I tend to think that...

    Broken? The popsicle/marshmellow attack

That's a point I'd missed (which is a tad annoying seeing as it was mentioned at the top of this thread that dragonbreath is a minor action) So yeah, if you've got a minor/move action encounter power then it's probably damned good tactics to always dump all the other ones and keep it as the...

Player just doing the same thing problem- please help.

Do you complain about the Wizard hanging back? Because they're both ranged attackers who are better off staying out of melee. How about you get one of the other players to ask him what tactics he thinks people should be using? He might have a case.

Player just doing the same thing problem- please help.

If there's a 10gp/head reward for Kobolds then killing Kobolds is not 'for no good reason'. Depending upon the campaign it might well be considered perfectly appropriate behaviour even for a good character. If you (and the rest of the group from the sounds of it) don't want him to play that way...

Player just doing the same thing problem- please help.

Barring a strange build an Archer Ranger build is far more effective with the bow than in Melee. If a bow archer in melee is better than the cleric then I'd say that the cleric build needs looking at. Really you have a Paladin as a tank, a cleric and rogue as melee combatants and a Wizard and...

    Broken? The popsicle/marshmellow attack

In the general case probably true, in this case you start with the Dragonborn having dragonbreath and the cleric having sunburst. Which is bad if you are in a situation where other powers would be more use and the party gets hurt because of it. If you select a power straight to regain...

    Broken? The popsicle/marshmellow attack

If you're using up all the encounter powers for a cleric and another character to keep doing healing and reduce the requirements for a rest so that the dragonborn won't get their encounter powers back you're sacrificing a lot of options for when you do have an encounter. I don't know how 30th...

how to manage a defender heavy group

It might well depend largely on how the fighters are built. If you have 1 sword and board as the main tank and 2 two hand fighters you might well be putting out enough damage to churn through mobs anyway. In terms of minion clearing fighters have enough bursts, cleave storm of steel etc that...

Well that didn't take long, wizard has been shelved.

So you're effectively giving almost every power the Reliable keyword for free. _And_ in many cases making the Miss effect a drawback. That's a pretty big change and probably bumps up almost every class compared to fighters.
