    Are Gognards killing D&D?

This is a pointless question as the answer is obvious... with the amount of WotC splats and supplements, let alone 3rd party products, I doubt ANYONE has fully explored 3.5. I know I haven't... and I certainly never full got use out of all my 2nd edition material. AD&D 1st edition I probably...

D&D 4E New Information on 4E Classes from Races & Classes Book

I thought Bard, Druid and Monk were not going to be in the Player's Handbook the first time around... did I miss something?

    Are Gognards killing D&D?

I'd hazard a guess that the major revamp has much to do with a desire to distance 4e from the 3.5 OGL. A major reason for the success of 3.5 is also a leading cause of it's demise. Don't be surprised if the 4e OGL is a lot less "bendable" then the 3.5 OGL.

    Are Gognards killing D&D?

The thinking behind 4e is twofold I think: 1 - A perceived need to clean up 3.0 / 3.5 which has grown into an unwieldy beast with a mountain of supplements and new rules over the past 8 years. 2 - A financial need to sell more core books. I think "1" is a justification for filling the need in...

    Are Gognards killing D&D?

I'm not too sure about that. Most players I know are "rules junkies". The 3.5 core rules and the 3.5 core plus official supplements are almost 2 different games. I haven't even touched on the use of 3rd party supplements. Yet all these "games" are still D&D. I am sure WotC is going to lose...

    Are Gognards killing D&D?

2nd edition started the splatbook craze... 3.0 and 3.5 allowed 3rd parties to grab (and dilute) the splatbook pie. Having yearly scheduled releases of splatbooks (yearly PHB, DMG, etc) will only help WotC increase their share of the splatbook pie... whether that pie grows, shrinks, or remains...

    Are Gognards killing D&D?

Uhm, if you knew the rules as a consumer before release, what would be the purpose of WOtC releasing them? Or are you saying that 4e will be a bunch of rules that have no roots in previous editions? Unless you are referring to third party publishers, putting the rules in the hands of the...

    Are Gognards killing D&D?

Kinda like Microsoft ending support for Win 98 and in short time XP as it has moved on to Vista? Our "Hobby" is a "Business" and if it isnt a viable one it will wither (tho' it might not die thanks to the OGL). No one is forcing anyone to move on to 4e... but Wizards is moving on to 4e and it...

Scenario - 2009: WOTC drops D&D product line - Death or Resurrection for RPG hobby?

The OGL wouldn't change, so the restrictions would still be there.

Will there ever be another Marvel or DC superhero RPG?

Marvel Super Heroes was first published in 1984 by TSR. Jeff Grubb wrote it. Marvel SAGA, or Marvel Super Heroes Adventure game was published in 1990. In my experience the first game (later updated in an Advanced version) is the one that people keep dragging out and trying to get some use of...

4th Edition, Kindle & The Future of Gaming Books

Doesnt the two pages, magazine size and hardcover kinda defeat the idea of portability? Kinda hard to stick that in your pocket. Price is kinda steep tho... there is one for $350 from another company that reads PDFs in their native format... name escapes me at the moment.

D&D 4E Rumor control: Lucca 4e seminar report inaccuracies

I think we are fairly far from getting locked. I would suggest that no one that is in the business put real hope in some resurrection of the D20 license for 4e. While the arguments for it are good, the lack of any true benefit for WotC to give away (even for a fee) the in-house design...

D&D 4E Rumor control: Lucca 4e seminar report inaccuracies

If there is not some sort of review process by WotC before publication then there is no quality control. Giving someone the tools to create quality does not ensure quality.

I expect you hit the nail on the head. My best guess is that as of the release of 4e there will be no more releases allowed under the D20 license.

D&D 4E Rumor control: Lucca 4e seminar report inaccuracies

I'll hazard a guess. Wulf might feel that WotC has spoken and it is too late in the game for them to change gears. Maybe he'd rather put his energy into figuring how best to publish under the new situation then tilt at windmills. Najo, in a perfect world where every publisher is not looking...

Hey, least I quoted my poor source.. a poor source that claimed to be quoting a trade magazine... :) In any case, you numbers show just how small our hobby is. Now, back to the topic at hand: What is the benefit to WotC to release their design documents to 3rd party publishers? (I know it...
