    D&D 5E You can't necessarily go back

After years and years of playing 4e I realized I missed the vagueness. 4e was a fantastic triumph of perfected mechanics, yet it just wasnt as much fun (IMHO). There was something wonderful and whimsical about leaving the rules light enough that there werent specific mechanics to cover every...

    D&D 5E Ability Scores in 5e

I would actually speculate that Con is more important than ever before thanks to HP thresholds. Its not just damage capacity any more, its now also resist everything. On another note, wasnt the intention that there was to be saves related to every stat. That yes, Int and Chr would both have...

Did I miss something? Where is the sorceror (and warlock) playtest info?

    [Playtest 2] HP thresholds

This is what I have greatest difficulty with. HP is fine for measuring how much you have left to contribute to the fight, but threshold seems to turn it into a "super-defence". Dont have a great mental save? Dont worry, thanks to your fantastic HP pool, you dont have to roll a save! So forget...

[playtest 2] Distressed by rogue damage

Cant say Im a fan of the rogues sneak damage. It just feels SO high. Pulling that off every round with no expense (other than needing advantage, which the Thug can get pretty darn easily) seems pretty high. First Point : feel free to disagree, in fact Im interested to here peoples takes on it...

    D&D 5E Multiclass in 5E

Im hoping they tackle multiclassing sooner. Treat it like an after thought and you may just end up with 4e PHB multiclassing (which was hardly one of 4e's more stellar aspects). IMHO It has to be baked into the core, not treated as a supplement to the core, or you will just get it wrong (power...

D&D 3E/3.5 The New Playtest: Why return the failed 3e mechanics?

On a related note, Im a bit concerned about multiclassing. I know they want to "get the basics" right first, but as far as I am concerned, multiclassing IS part of the basics, and as has been observed here there are some facets of design that are counter-intuitive to making it work (at least, by...

Why do Halflings get damage bonuses?

Agreed. This whole thread is one of the biggest storm-in-a-teacups so far. Really, in terms of things we could focus our efforts on trying to provide feedback on, this one is nothing...they get a d8 where they would have got a d6? Well Whoopdy-do.

    Non Advantage/Disadvantage bonus and penalties

I could interpret that as character 2 over-capitalising, rather than saying he is being "screwed". Chances are player 2 spent alot of effort to stack all those bonus's onto himself (3.X cleric, Im looking at you!). Also, dont you have advantage if your number of advantages is greater than the...

Why do Halflings get damage bonuses?

I dont see a massive issue. Is there really going to result in slews of halfling killing machines? At best, this puts them on par (damage wise) with medium sized races.

What a steaming pile of otyugh feces!

I feel like a Pitfiend in a room full of helpless victims (really, that happy)

    Non Advantage/Disadvantage bonus and penalties

Im kinda with you on this. The old +1/-1 here and there is one of those "Sounds completely feasible on paper" things, but ultimately leads to counting nightmares in end game scenarios (Not SO much 4e, but high 3e keeping track of bonus's was just a pain), and then the whole end game "I have a...

    Weapon Proficiency: All or nothing?

As a designer, whouldnt you just implement this position by saying "Let impose a -2 penalty for non-proficiency use and increase toHits on all classes by 1"? It has exactly the same effect mathematically and doesnt need a hidden bonus.

    Dual-weapon fighting is extremely lackluster

I love it when people put "period" at the end of a post, lets me know who they are. Yes, rounding down will result in less...on average .5 points per round. When we are up to 40+ damage per round thats going to have a MASSIVE impact. On another note, one advantage of TWF is when you need to...

    D&D 5E [D&D Next] Second Packet - initial impressions

No, its not just you. I found the damage on the rogue ridiculous in 3e, and this is just worse. Especially the thug. Gets sneak attack if two friendlies within reach? The concept of single tough enemy is out the window (unless you specifically engineer the enemy to counter this effect). Bit...

New playtest and feats...did I miss something?

Ah good. Saw the paragraph in character creation. So specialities are "suggested" feat paths. You may or may not have them in your campaign, and you may or may not allow players to pick their own feats (kinda like a player unique bespoke speciality) Thats good. Like that. Players that dont...

New playtest and feats...did I miss something?

Ok, the new playtest. We now have "specialisation" (replaces traits). Fine. You get to pick a specialisation when you create your character. Good. Specialisations look like feat packages in that they are offering level 1 and 3 feats (and no more since playtest only goes to 5th). Understood...
