D&D 4E 4E combat and powers: How to keep the baby and not the bathwater?

This is where the divide in opinion lies. I do want DM fiat driving it, but I want the rules to give strong aid in this process. This is a tabletop game. Its strength compared to other forms of gaming is that the game can change and adapt as circumstances dictate because the DM can control it...

D&D 4E 4E combat and powers: How to keep the baby and not the bathwater?

Im not sure I understood this bit. Are you saying you want a power system AND an improvisation system to work side by side? e.g. there exists a power which trips an enemy, but if I dont have said power that the system allows that I can "improvise" tripping him (DM allowing).

D&D 4E 4E combat and powers: How to keep the baby and not the bathwater?

Thats right, PF did have that. Thanks for pointing out. Its not perfect (wont get into a debate of its virtue) but it does show that there is thought out there what martial does can be modeled differently than a power structure. The thing I liked about it was that it said "this is how to use if...

D&D 4E 4E combat and powers: How to keep the baby and not the bathwater?

That really does assume AEDU is the only solution to prevent "I attack, I attack, I attack". Are we so bereft of ideas?

D&D 4E 4E combat and powers: How to keep the baby and not the bathwater?

Totally with OP on the "gamist" nature of AEDU. I would add to his observations that one aspect of this that really dragged for me was the same-same'ness it gave to characters (Feel free to disagree. This was how I observed it). I totally love the idea of martial powers being in the "real...

The First Five Books (after core)

A little more fringe, but I have always wanted a "Book of sample encounters and small dungeon runs". Im really after something that gives me building blocks for my own campaign. Something to give me some pre-composed pieces that can be fit into any situation. More than that however, I want...

D&DN and Epic Fantasy ((Apologies, Long))

You know, I WAS going to say "Thats a different game" or "Tried it, too hard" But the more I think about it, the more you might be right. What is the real game difference in progressing tiers? Nothing, just bigger numbers, different powers. In retrospect, I would have been happier ending our 4e...

D&D 5E The math of D&D Next; a moderating proposal

Gotcha. 15 points worth of growth. If thats over 30 levels, it definitely flatter than 4e.

    Ability Dependency/Importance

I have done some soul searching on this point and have to admit, Im totally coming around to the idea of making every class totally MAD. Totally drop this idea of Class X = Stat Y and just make it that every class NEEDS every stat. Then, when some of your stats are low and therefore there are...

D&D 5E The math of D&D Next; a moderating proposal

On the whole, your analysis is correct. More than that, kudos for stripping back numbers to core and presenting them concisely before drawing conclusions. If I might ask a question though. You have 20 points worth of growth...over what level range is that? 1-20 or 1-30? 4e had a level range of...

D&D 5E Please Cap the Ability Scores in 5E

This debate has been made in other threads and I have contributed to those as well. Im not going to re-iterate points as that just becomes petty squabbling. I disagree with your analysis and your drawing conclusions as to my intentions. Some growth is needed, yes, but we are intelligent beings...

From specialization to diversification: Choice & playing a fighter

Im simply not a fan of when encounter choices is driven by what you did at last level up. Sure, have some definition at level up which impacts encounter time performance, but I so prefer that player tactics drive success. This is the issue I have with fighter weapon specialization. It ends up...

D&D 5E Please Cap the Ability Scores in 5E

I feel like I have stepped off a space ship reading this thread. Previous thread (cant be bothered looking up) asked the question about whether stats should increase at all and I got the impression there was a growing number of people who were all for stats not even increasing (myself included...

Flattening the math: AC and Attack bonuses idea

This is good. Your post in general is well said. The entire idea of constantly upping numbers dates back to 1e when it was as simple as this. Over time, more definition has come to the martial role and with this definition I find it question that we need scaling any more. 4e tackled this...

Top end of +N weapons and armor?

I voted +3, because I see that as a compromise between old direction and new direction. If I reflect on my experience with 4e in particular a +3 to anything was battle altering, and if a weapon can give a +3 to every attack roll you make during the battle, the effect is profound. +3 for...

    L&L Turning & Churning

I completely concur with the early observations. It has always annoyed me that one of the most perfect antagonistic subsets of enemies the players can face has this terrible weakness. In 4e, one of my player specc'd himself up as an undead slaying cleric. End Result? Stopped putting undead in...

    +2 max for magic items?

When we dumped out exisitng equipment and reverted to inherent bonus in 4e, one the the items a party member eventually got was an "of accuracy" item (homebrew) which was simply a +1 item bonus to hit. Other gear was "funkier", but the +1 to hit was just a +1 to hit. So the +1 became a special...

Changing the Duration of a Rest

This is the same question as "how long is a round?" (i.e. trying to define game time in real time). The mechanism of short vs long rest is about its impact in terms of capacity to recover. You could say an extended rest is a minute or a year...its still an extended rest and does exactly the...

    Constitution and HP

I think there is room for alternate thinking, not necessary, but at least putting the options on the board before assuming it has to be a facsimile of something that has gone before. One alternate I would throw forward was from Warhammer40k RP where "toughness" was actually modeled as damage...

    +2 max for magic items?

Any speculating about this being right or wrong is premature. Without understanding how the game scales, +1, +2 or even +6 we have no real idea of what is appropriate. That said, I agree with winding back the mandatory nature of the the "+" nature of equipment. Not removing altogether, but when...
