It might not make sense for humans, but if you are a dragon and you prefer to make your bed out of coins, it makes perfect sense.

Dave Meredelozzi here. I DM considerably more than I play. I definitely run games because I like too, though it is true that no one else in my regular group does. I wouldn't mind some action on the other side of the screen, but in addition to, not instead of, DMing.

If we're estimating, than we're not worried about precision. If we are, we'll grab the ruler. The player may or may not know exactly if he's passing though a threatened area, that's my call as DM, and I find it easy enough to just ask them to show me how they moved and decide accordingly...
