D&D 5E Removing the Concentration Damage Save: Houseruling the Affected Feats and Abilities

This is absolutely not true. Save on Damage was added very late in the playtest and no core rules changed with regards to the addition. Maybe a majority of non-open players wanted the 'save on damage' but it was certainly not something built into the system from early on. Groups have been...

D&D 5E Who is Matthew Colville?

.75 speed sounds pretty normal. 50% speed is about hooww Iiii ssspeaaaak norrmaallly.

D&D 5E Swimming and combat : rules clarification

    1. By the rules there are no 'critical failures' for ability checks. The closest is usually a 'fail by 5 or more', in this case I'd go fail by 10 or more. 2. Checks you're expecting the whole party to need to make shouldn't be DC 20, or even DC 15 unless the group is higher level. 3. If...

    D&D 5E Animal Handling in 5e

I'd use the rules in JoLydee's Beasts of Battle if someone wanted an animal pet (or really any extra NPCs including mounts). Up to the point they started power gaming it and then I'd go back to the default. Either way I'd allow death saves, short rest healing with hit dice, and equally...

Characters can miss out. Players can just make more characters.

D&D 5E Downsides to Mounted Combat?

I've seen a tweet from Jeremy pointing out that while the Mount and rider have the same initiative they still have discrete turns. So either the player goes (Action and move) and then the mount takes its full turn or the reverse. You could rule that the actions and movement isn't combined...

D&D 5E Darkness spell and magic light

As much as I try to follow RAW, this was a weird case where 3 years in, we have been doing it not RAW. Considering how disruptive the Darkness/Devil's Sight combo has been, I'm surprised it hadn't come up on the boards.

D&D 5E 70% standard and the Ranger options

Jeremy elaborates more on the 70%+ target in a recent Sage Advice. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vE28Saqcow Around 25:20 Regarding hitting 90%, based on the conversation none of the subclasses hit 90%. The closest was the forge domain cleric which was very close. They speak about the...

D&D 5E More time to play with feats

Mechanically I think you'd be better off giving a feat and a +1 stat at 4th to everyone instead of buffing some feats and not others. Like Mellored, my preference would be to just cap stats at 18 and lower the 'pressure' for maxing a notch plus it reduces the math to help add challenge at the...

D&D 5E 70% standard and the Ranger options

Sorry I remembered the medium but the wrong video. Jeremy eludes to it during the D&D Beyond videos but Mike says it three time in a Nerdarchy video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ld6bS3ptYws Oct 19, 2017.

D&D 5E 70% standard and the Ranger options

If I exclude the Paladin the ability list looks pretty comparable. If the Exploration pillar is ignored or very minimal in the campaign then it might lag behind the other 2.

D&D 5E D&D adventure for Ixalan, from PAX Unplugged!

"The new miniatures line and board game are set to release in Fall 2018." Now I'm bummed. A year away. Maybe the 2018/2019 season is Planescape/Planewalker themed.

D&D 5E 70% standard and the Ranger options

During the D&D Beyond previews by Todd Kenreck both Mike Mearls and Jeremy Crawford mentioned the 70% approval metric they are shooting for when adding content to the game. I haven't seen any discussion on this but it seems like that would have some repercussions on elements like the Ranger...

D&D 5E No good deed goes unpunished

I'd ask my players. I'm not a fan of springing things on characters that they would understand even if the player's don't. If the players don't understand the relative value of currency in the world, at least the characters should unless they are being played especially naive.

D&D 5E No good deed goes unpunished

So clue us in. By the book it isn't very much. Unskilled at 2sp per day. Skilled at 1-2gp. Entertainers at 4gp. We have folks running anything between real world $10 to $1000 per gold piece. And $100 is very common. I've never seen a $10,000 in cash but I have endorsed a $150,000 check...

    D&D 5E 5th edition force cage spell

I'd probably allow it a Dex save like the Pathfinder version. If the component were consumed on casting I might rethink that. Although more likely we just reboot the campaign at 12th. How thick is an arrow shaft anyway - those 1/2" apart invisible bars seem pretty narrow.

D&D 5E Re-opening discussion on multiple spell concentration.

Concentration: A spell with Concentration (C) ends when you die or the duration expires. That's it. If it was good enough for 1e/2e/3.x/PF it shouldn't destroy your game. Just make sure you still do 6-8 encounters per day with 2 short rests.

    D&D 5E 5E Wound/Vitality System

I could see switching to 1e/2e style HP only after level 10 or so but with 3e/5e style multiclassing it requires tracking the order levels are gained (+1 hp/level for d6 classes, +2 hp/level for d8 classes, +3 hp/level for d10/d12 classes after 10th).

D&D 5E Falling Rules and actually Falling

Pain points: 1. The damage dice cap failed to increase in proportion with increased HD, actually played character levels, and easy Con bonuses. Solution: Increase the cap to 40 or 50 dice (with electronic dice rollers this isn't nearly as onerous as it would have been 40 years ago). 2...

D&D 5E Hit Points as a Ki Force Shield or a Life Force Field

This is my default position. But 'Die Hard' toughness doesn't explain getting shot in the head while paralyzed and shrugging it off as well. Or how your gear is protected from a Fireball. It's not that I need to explain these away but if I want to - a force field seems provide an...
