    Area Bursts and Cover

Yes, that's how it works. No, it's not a problem. The wizard (mechanically) doesn't throw the "realistic" (:hmm:) fireball, it simply appears at the spot where he wants it to be.

    Perception and taking 10/20.

Well, the DMG goes on further to say that you should wait about 2 minutes (game time) before giving them the 20, which equates to 20 rounds. In this case, they wouldn't find the secret door in time by that method. So they would have to actually be rolling themselves. Can they find the door in...

Difference between Attacks and Attack Rolls.

When dealing with multiple attack powers, you don't critical on all attacks of the power. One natural 20 does not give the rest of the attacks natural 20. Therefore, you choose to make one roll of the die to come out a critical. All other attacks before or after the critical are unaffected...

    Perception and taking 10/20.

DMG 41 - "Unless the characters are under a time constraint, assume that they’re going to roll a 20 eventually, and use the best possible Perception check result for the party." Also, it is quite easy to do worse when actively rolling. Imagine when you are trying to find your keys. At that...

    Shields and item slots

Yes, you can have a pair of magic bracers and a mundane shield (or vice versa, if you really wanted). The items slots being discussed are magic item slots. They have little bearing on how much you can physically wear. PHB 224 - "You can benefit from only one magic item that you wear in your...

    Shields and item slots

No. You can either have the fire resistance OR the longer range. You can not have both active at the same time.

    Boundless Endurance

PHB 267 - "The encounter ends when the [winning] side then takes a short rest or an extended rest." PHB 278 - "Until the End of the Encounter: The effect ends when you take a rest (short or extended) or after 5 minutes." So you're actually doing it right. ;)

Increasing damage done by half HP monsters.

Check out Dasuul's system. I haven't been able to try it out yet, but seems pretty good.

    Sliding allies without powers

The person doing the 'sliding' could always just use a bull rush to push them out of the way. Though that doesn't help if you are looking to pull them towards you...

Consumable item pricing: A method to the madness?

The magic item level formula breaks down in the beginning levels. At higher levels, a consumable can also be considered a level-10 item. A level 30 potion is worth a level 20 magic item, level 29 potion is level 19 magic item, etc. This breaks down as they rounded all the magic item levels to...

Does Fire Resistance stop endurance checks for Heat?

Perhaps the armor can only protect you against flashes of fire? There, the danger is in your flesh burning. While in a desert environment, the main dangers are dehydration and heatstroke. Fire Resistance doesn't stop you from sweating. ;) Now, that explanation works for magic items /...

Can you take 20 in 4th edition?

It's up to the DM. I apply it to anything you can reasonably Take 20 on.

    Healing Surge item powers?

The first quote is a description. The second quote is the actual rules. Healing Surge item != Daily. It says like a daily, not this is a daily. Healing Surge items are completely independent from daily magic item use limits. The only limit is the amount of Healing Surges you use to recharge...

    Pythagorus in the machine

I can't believe that I can't find it... but the RAW for flying ranges is that you take the largest number between horizontal distance and vertical distance. So if the creature is 5 over and 4 up, then it is 5 squares away when counting range for attacks. Edit: Ha! DMG 45, Movement in Three...

    Minions - tell the PCs?

I personally like to think of minions as the Redshirts of D&D. You (the audience/player) know that they are minions. The characters only know what is described. To represent minions, we use smaller dice than we normally use for creatures. Works for us.

    D&D 4E Green Slime for 4e?

Blue Slime - KotS Shadow Slime - Dragon 367 Only slimes I know of. Also, please, for the sake of everyone playing, don't just yank the 3.5 slime and use it in 4e. It really is a different game. You at the very least want to check out the DMG for expected values for HP/Attacks/Damage/etc...

    Adjusting Monsters for Faster Combat

Just to clarify, does "-X AC, -X all defenses" mean that you remove 2X from AC? AC is still a defense so... If you mean "all defenses" to mean "all defenses other than AC," either just list out the defenses or say NADs (non-armor defenses). I might have to try out the defense lowering aspect...

Question on Repulsion Armor from Adventurer's Vault

False. You are limited to one immediate action per round. If the enemies decide to rush you at the same time, Repulsion armor will only work on one of them. As for the compromise.... that's how it would work anyways.

Wizard + Dungeon Door = Invincible Wizard?

Use non-linear dungeon design. Have a group of enemies go around and flank the party. All of a sudden, the wizard is facing four creatures by himself. Probably the biggest hurdle in dungeon designing in 4e is to stop making linear one-room-per-fight dungeons. Make it so two or three rooms...
