    Tell me about Burning Wheel

BW is a game I want to like, but don't. I think this is mainly because the rules encourage failure - the assumption goes that Failure = Complications = Drama = Fun. Combine that with "Let it Ride" (only one roll to resolve a particular task, made ahead of time), and you not only fail a lot...

D&D 4E Is 4E doing it for you?

Sorry, but your math is off in both of your examples. Looking at a hypothetical case: Fighter 1: 15 Strength, +7 to hit from level, strength and proficiency. Needs to roll an 11 or better to hit an average enemy of his level. 50% chance to hit. Fighter 2: Same as Fighter 1, but with Str 20...

    OotS 590

Or some character spoils everything by remembering that in D&D, being tied up doesn't make you helpless so it's not like anyone can deliver a CdG. :P

    DM Entitlement...

I'm strongly in favor of the DM having the control and the final say - but I actually care about that more when I'm the player, and not when I'm the DM. When the DM is fully in control, pretty much the only issue is whether my taste in RPGs matches the DM's - which means I only need to worry...

    Forked Thread: Changeover poll

If you're going to make comparisons to the other thread, they do matter. If you don't know how many people chose not to convert to 3E at all, you can't make any real comparisons with Edena's poll. (unless, of course, you accept that it was a small enough number to be negligible - which it might...

    Forked Thread: Changeover poll

The numbers are not exactly the same. For one, the polls ask completely different questions. In addition, the numbers are not at all what you misrepresent them as. The first poll asks basically "Which are you playing more of - 4E or 3E?" The responses from people who play 4E half of the time...

    Forked Thread: Changeover poll

Your own poll is now showing that 73% of people who converted to 3E did so in 3 months or less. Meanwhile, if I recall the numbers from pre-release polls correctly (and I think I do, since to be honest, it stuck in my craw that more people weren't right-thinking 4E haters like me :p), the...

    Forked Thread: Changeover poll

No, it's really nothing like what we saw on ENWorld when the change from 2e to 3e occurred. I don't remember the mods having to resort to outright bans of comparing the two editions, for example. I also don't recall the 2e holdouts being anywhere near as numerous. Do you have any data to back up...

D&D 4E Just played my first 4E game

Nonsense. Why does it have to be like one specific video game? Sorry, but you don't get to define the criteria for winning the argument as whatever suits you, then claim victory. Well, at least not if you want to be taken seriously...

That's it; I am done buying minis'!

Reaper sells a great bronze half-dragon mini that's perfect for a dragonborn. It's not a good angle of it, I think it looks much better at first hand.

    Making trouble for a womaniser

I fail to see how most of those won't be at least as much trouble for for the party as for the character. They're not going to dump him to deal with it on his own, are they? The real question is - how do the other players feel about it. If they don't mind, then who cares? Take your adventure...

    Forked Thread: Three more days

No, it's not. Hong can be that way at his best, but for all intents and purposes, he's just a troll. Hong virtually never starts a discussion - most of the time, he jumps into the middle of an existing one that he wasn't even involved in, and tries to derail it for his own amusement. It's none...

    Great City Campaign Setting...not 4e...sucks

...I'm pretty sure the GSL explicitly makes it impossible to release similar 3.5 and 4E "enhancements". Once you release something under the GSL, you can't make the same title for any other system. It also prohibits companies from releasing electronic materials. (by default, anyway)

Forked Thread: Once per day non-magical effects destroy suspension of disbelief

No, it doesn't fall into that category. I just looked at the sticky, and it specifically mentions being able to talk about things you like or don't like about 4E. If you don't like this thread, report it - it's the moderators' job to decide what's appropriate, not yours.

Is 4E the New Coke of RPGs?

Maybe we can disguise an edition war thread by calling 3E Coke and 4E Pepsi. Of course, it'll look weird if people start discussing the lack of gnomes and half-orcs in Pepsi, but I'm confident the mods won't catch on. :)

Coup de Grace vs. Players -- Mean DM or Fair Play?

I try to avoid using CdG when I DM - my NPCs will almost never risk AOOs to finish off a PC, and they won't waste actions hitting someone who's already down when being threatened by someone else. However, if - for example (a 3.5 based example) - a PC fails a save against Hold Person, or lets...

Mamacat's helpful hints for gaming with couples with or without kids

It's not that "kids are a hassle" - I just want how much I interact with kids to be a matter of choice, not of how complacent and lazy their parents are. ...kids love me, actually. Which, come to think of it, could be used as an argument against them, since it proves they're complete idiots. ;)

Mamacat's helpful hints for gaming with couples with or without kids

If they enjoy it, good for them. However, too many parents tend to think that everyone should find their kids to be as absolutely adorable as they do, and fail to realize that just because they don't mind if the little beasts run wild, others (in particular, the childless ones) have no right...

Mamacat's helpful hints for gaming with couples with or without kids

Honestly, the number one point I get out of this whole thing is: "Don't play with people who try to mix children and D&D" I mean, I game with some people who are married, a couple of them have kids... and none of them would dream of bringing a kid to a game. Or invite others to play at their...

    Dragon 365 - Artificer

It's not a terrible class - in fact, it's probably more interesting in some ways than the PHB classes, because of the powers it gets - but nothing about it screams "Artificer" to me. The veneer that differentiates it from some other kind of caster is so thin it might as well not even be there...
