My God, It's Full of Clones

Personally I would find a different challenge or do it in a different way. Otherwise is sort of smacks of taunting your players with the vaunted "npc only" effects.

    Greybeards & Grognards 1

You say this as if the english language has some sort of purity attributable to it. To misquote an author whose name I forget (it may be Pratchett) the English language has been known to mug other languages in dark alleys and rifle their pockets for spare vocabulary... :) Also, I am a Geek...

My God, It's Full of Clones

If it breaks the game then dont use it. Dont just stick it in and then include a bunch of restrictions solely designed so that you can blow raspberries at your players. Ask yourself instead what character would do that. Well, any decent level Wizard with a reasonable Int, which is to say, all...

Do Magic Item "Shops" wreck the spirit of D&D?

I assumed from this quote that you were being sarcastic. Your post fills me with despair.

    Gear Matters

It is entirely possible to run a high fantasy setting in which gear plays a far smaller role. Examples from literature: Tolkein Conan Elric It is entirely possible to design a game in which gear has less of a role and still have high action, high fantasy without requiring the PC's to be...

Do Magic Item "Shops" wreck the spirit of D&D?

OK, its late and my sarcasm detectors seem to be on the blink so I have to ask. Your kidding right, please tell me your kidding...?

Do Magic Item "Shops" wreck the spirit of D&D?

Saruman accuses Gandalf of trying to seize the rods of the 5 Wizards. Thats pretty indicative that they are more than just symbolic.

Do Magic Item "Shops" wreck the spirit of D&D?

At this point you are just being petty. The vast majority of magical effects in D&D, whatever edition you are looking at, are predictable. When the wizard casts magic missile, guess what, he creates magical missiles. He doesnt have a chance of getting it wrong, slipping up or otherwise...

My God, It's Full of Clones

The classicly cited abuse for this is to take a very stupid or dominated goblin, put a ring of wishes in its pocket, hold it in front of the mirror, take the duplicate ring from the copy while ignoring its feeble attacks and make your wishes. Rinse and repeat as required. Really, anything...

Do Magic Item "Shops" wreck the spirit of D&D?

From my recollection it was the font which showed Frodo and Sam visions of the future rather than anything Galadrial herself did. I distincly recall lines about it being dangerous to look in. I would add to the first category the Staves of the Istari although they didnt really get used to do...

Do Magic Item "Shops" wreck the spirit of D&D?

I dont think anyone is claiming it is low fantasy. In fact its similar to one of my most enjoyable D&D games. It started when 3e had just come out. we knew nothing of the apparent "assumptions" of the CR system and most of us hadnt played D&D for numerous years. After 18 months of...

Do Magic Item "Shops" wreck the spirit of D&D?

From the books he had two, Stormbringer and the Emperors Ring. Thinking through the rest of the books the examples of other magical gear are all extremely rare. Mournblade, the giant mechanicals the priestess of law whose name I forget just now had. The idea of demon binding to create gear...

Do Magic Item "Shops" wreck the spirit of D&D?

At the risk of throwing the thread off on a bit of a tangent the Elric universe, much like Tolkien, was one with little in the way of magical gear. I find a suggestion that Elric was wearing magic boots but Moorcock never bothered to mention them about as credible as saying Frodo was packing...

    Sustenance - Tracked or Handwaved

Things that I handwave: Sustenance, unless it is really germane to the plot, e.g. if abandoned in the harsh desert without food or water after pissing off the locals Ammunition, I simply assume the PC's refill when able Encumbrance, I will eyeball a PC sheet and as long as they arent trying to...

The Doomed Bastards: Reckoning (story complete)

Oh dear, I think our ragged band of heroes is in for an even tougher time. I dont have my books here but I *think* the corpse gatherer is from MM2? If my dodgy memory serves it is also pretty damn vicious. At the very least Varo should survive. I am certain he will have a Word of Recall...

    Casting Multiple "cloud" type spells

Just make to sure to add in Wall of Stone or Force for added effect and maniacal laughing. Oh, and definately Evards and quite possibly Web as well. It doesnt take that long for a mid level caster to totally incapacitate quite a large area of enemies.

What didn't people like about Greyhawk From the Ashes?

I see this bandied about a fair amount but I am not at all convinced it is true. Which part of FR makes you think it has too many restrictions. Which parts of it scream too much detail. Take a look at pretty much any published FR map and you will find huge blank areas on the map entirely...

The Doomed Bastards: Reckoning (story complete)

Doh, I actually meant Varo as he seems to uses summons fairly often. On a related note I wonder what Zozimos's banned schools are/

The Doomed Bastards: Reckoning (story complete)

Its a wolverine not a rat so I assume its on of Dar's summons. Standard operating procedure when you dont have a rogue, have a summoned monster open the big doors to the evil temple.

The Doomed Bastards: Reckoning (story complete)

I am loving the updates LB. I am curious about one thing. Who was the person who surprised Varo in a previous update? I suspect it was the Marshall but it isnt clear and of course that may be intentional on your part.
