D&D 5E Would you allow switching shield proficiency for Agonizing Blast as a DM?

I'd vote no on allowing that. Warlocks are already too front loaded for dipping purposes, we want to see less of that, not more. I allow people with shield proficiency to use another item for parrying for +1AC. So an off-hand dagger not used to attack with can be used to parry instead. Same...

D&D (2024) Is the 5E player base going to split?

I like to skip to the end of long threads like this to see what the latest discussion is. It is normally either something really odd yet heated like: "I told you, Ferrets are a type of muskilid! and I fail to see how the breeding cycle of tortoises is even relevant to this discussion of Keats!"...

D&D General Decision paralysis: how do you homebrew?

If you are truly unsure about the world, just ask the PCs to not be well travelled. They are all from the local area, an obscure valley. They have no idea what is outside of the immediate campaign area. You don't need to even establish what world they are in. What they call the gods might be...

    Does TSR3 Have Nazi Connections?

I came here to complain that as much as we might dislike TSR3, calling them Nazis is too slanderous and is... ...wait up. Yep, they have Nazis among them. Well...carry on...

D&D 5E A Guardian Angel... Good or Bad Idea?

Insane angels are a staple of my settings. If an angel is separated from their patron, they lack true free will or ambition. They start going mad if they cannot perform their primary functions. They are also naïve and single minded. Examples of how this can be problematic that I have used: An...

D&D General Xp rewards for defeating monsters

What behavior are you trying to encourage with awarding XP this way? I guess that is where I would start in creating a system. Do you want them to fight more / harder enemies / more enemies at once / a variety of enemies? Whatever you choose, they will do, so be careful. Personally I don't...

D&D 5E Turn into vampire with wish?

In a game world where the gods are real, souls are a fact and hell is a place you can visit, who in their right mind would opt to damn their soul for eternity so they can move faster?

D&D General Orcs on Stairs (When Adventures Are Incomplete)

At this point sinking the boot into Horde of the Dragon Queen is probably passe'. What I did notice from an earlier reading of that was a complete lack of "why?". We are told what the villians are doing, but we have no idea why they are running around in circles. There seemed to be a lot of...

D&D General What penalties or how should i handle this wish?

I'd just make the Eldritch Knight level 20. Tada, "full potential" has been reached. Gaining 4 levels is nothing to sneeze at. Mechanically, nobody has the potential to be a level 20 fighter and level 20 mage, that is why we don't cap out at level 40.

Spelljammer Why Play Spelljammer Over a Regular Pirate Campaign?

A semi-related note, if you want to do ship to ship combat, steal some of the ship rules from SW5E. It is really exceptional.

D&D General Does you campaign setting match where you live?

Australian here. I would say that the main difference from my setting to others is how much you don't want to go near the water. I think I subconsciously put crocodiles and sharks in every bit of water. I also use mangroves a great deal. PCs are always finding themselves in paperbark forests...

D&D General D&D 6e comes out, and the game also makes use of these dice, your thoughts?

That is just bizarre, why not roll 3d12? It even avoids the ugly+2. Then again, I have a d30 myself. It is used in Harnmaster for rolling your birthday.

D&D 5E Clarifying Dungeon Turns for my Players

While I would not personally use what @NotAYakk was suggesting in my group, I think it could be really handy for groups that want to add a strategic/tactical element to their exploration play. It would work really well on a tight time frame. It would also work well for all inexperienced or lazy...

D&D General D&D isn't a simulation game, so what is???

As @Hussar said, if you want gritting dark ages realism, then Harnmaster is the way to go. Be warned that it is not 'fair'. PCs start with STDs, fleas or even leprosy. If you are a woman, you are shorter and weaker than men, and that matters. If you are born under the wrong star sign you will...

D&D 5E Player feedback: Deserved Easy Win or a Satisfying Win?

In a game I ran, PCs stripped many of the powers of the BBeG, making him a bit of a cake walk. Instead of just having the villian be unable to use a power, I described how it failed, clearly showing the effect of the PCs preparation. E.g. The vampire lord howls to the moon, the forest comes...

D&D General Starting your session - how to announce that the game starts?

As a DM I found it most effective to loudly announce in a cheesy voice-over voice (think oldschool batman series) "When last we saw our heroes...." It quiets people down, allows me to give a recap of exactly where they are, and lets everybody know we are playing now.

D&D General Are the best days of your campaign world ahead or behind?

I'm basically running a Robin Hood campaign. The PCs are throwing off the oppressive yokes of their feudal lords. So in their local region things should improve. A mere 150 years ago, the world had gods and angels walking amongst people, uplifting the virtuous and punishing the wicked. They are...

D&D 5E Perma-Death At Your Table: How Possible Is It?

I selected: It happens, but not very often...usually because of bad luck. But what I wanted to select is that is happens due to rampant stupidity, not bad luck. As GM I normally find away around PC death, except where they have done something really silly. If you plaster over stupidity, then it...

D&D 5E How do you feel about PC abilities being nerfed by the DM?

Nerfing before the game is fine. I try to avoid doing it during the game though. Normally something that is OP is only that really OP for a couple of levels. The Moon Druid is a prime example of that. At low level they are insanely OP, but does that really matter? You are not low level for...

D&D General Math Question re: 3d6 vs. 4d6 drop one

That +1 to everything might be similar to +1 proficiency bonus. If the OPs suggestion was because they want PCs to suck at some things, but not be worse at the things they are meant to be good at, then simply adding a +1 to proficiency could help.
