D&D 5E Convince me to keep reading Princes of the Apocalypse (*significant* spoilers. Also my players keep out)

On the Sword Coast I always felt it was a rather good environment for the limited government to not care enough about things to act on the PCs calling for help. I am rather ignorant about the official lore on the place admittedly, but the area as I imagine it works well. - Complete strangers...

    Mario Does D&D

As strange as it sounds, I am not very familiar with Nintendo stuff and actually ran some encounters like this accidently. I had an adventure series where the myconids were being driven from their land and enslaved by a dragon-turtle. My players all thought that I was running it tongue in cheek...

D&D 5E How do you use the Thief subclass features?

I play a Musketeer style character who is a fighter/thief. I use the "use item" bonus action all the time, often to gain combat advantage (in the broad or specific sense) I pull the rug the bad guys are standing on, cut down the curtain they are standing next to in the hope it blinds them...

    Greg Tito Is UHURA!

D&D 5E A lich must periodically feed souls to its phalactery...

For me, liches are a bit like the bad guy from The Mummy. The more they feed, the more alive they look. So the old ones you find locked in hidden crypts tend to be tatters of bone and old robes. The lich-kings that rule a city-state could be easily mistaken for human.

    D&D 5E Would you change a monster's hit points mid-fight?

This is what I find puzzling, is it the idea of fairness being offended? It's not that I do or don't think it is fair to fudge, it is that in my mind, the concept of 'fair' just does not really enter into consideration in an RPG. It seems rather non-sequiter to me, like if somebody said it was...

D&D 5E Choosing between ASI and Feats; how important is a maxed stat?

What I dislike about the current system of feats vs ASI is that for any Dex based character the ASI always seems way better. It amounts to +1AC, +1to hit, +1 damage, +1 initiative, +1 to dex saves, +1 to stealth/acro. Feats don't really compete with that. For a Str based guy, they don't get the...

    D&D 5E Would you change a monster's hit points mid-fight?

I can and do change monster HP all the time. I'm really surprised to hear that so many others object to doing so. I'm coming from such a different perspective that I have a hard time even seeing the common ground in the far distance on this one. I will often play up how badly the BBEG has got...

D&D 5E Level Up! DING, fries are done!

My PCs only level up at meal breaks. That might be in the middle of a combat for all I care, as long as it does not slow or stop the game at all.

D&D 5E Cost To Pay For Resurrection?

In my games the goddess of death is always very jealous of other people using resurrection. To the extent that most other churches will make you get the Raven Queens blessing before any resurrection. She is neither good nor bad, but demands to be respected. One little quest I use is that the...

[UPDATED] Check Out These PRINCES OF THE APOCALYPSE Maps!

I'm really excited to hear about this adventure having the same cartographer and writer as LMoP. It being in the same area is just the icing on the cake, that is great. Heck I would have been happy with sequel "The Found Mine of Phandelver". The initial blurb description of the adventure just...

    D&D 5E Tiamat Strikes Back

They intercepted a shipment to a merchant. They likely have no proof that it was a dragon egg (is it illegal even if it was?). That sounds a lot like banditry to me. I would lodge a complaint with the merchants guild. That shipment contained vital supplies for a profitable and noble endevour...

D&D 5E Neverwinter & the North (LMoP campaign sequel)

I can't give much wide sweeping advice, but does the PC still have the cursed item? What I did was have a 'benefactor' that was quiet obviously evil-ish offer to cure the guy of the curse for free and take that nasty cursed item off his hands for safe keeping too. It seems like a great deal, but...

    D&D 5E Druid Spider Form

I would of course remind the climbing PCs that they are covering themselves in their companions excretions. Make sure to mention the tiny chunks of corn and carrot stuck in the webs, and the fact that they are picking it out of their hair for days.

D&D 5E Roll20's RNG - or Evil Electronic Dice Gods?

My experience with programming and RNGs is basically that they are foolproof. They are so complex that they are not programmed at the providers end. Basically it is like writing a book and just photocopying that entire chapter off somebody else. It is just a snap-in that works. The things that...

    D&D 5E Druid Spider Form

I would say very much strong enough for that, but also way too sticky to climb. I can't imagine attempting to climb a spiders web, you could not grab the next bit higher up, as the bit you are holding would be stuck in your hands. There is a reason you don't see insects, that are great at...

    D&D 5E Goliath - Stone's Endurance alternative

Both suggestions look reasonable to me. We just have to careful about what the yardstick for effectiveness is. The ability is a little too effective at low level, I suspect it will be OK during mid levels. Assuming even one short rest a day. At level one a fighter with 14 con has 12HP, this...

D&D 5E Neverwinter & the North (LMoP campaign sequel)

Nebulous if you wouldn;t mind, could you please tell me approximately how many hours of play LMoP was for your group? Did you do all the side missions? If you want a set up for doing some city adventures, I suggest taking a look at Murder in Baldurs Gate. To me, it failed at its stated purpose...

D&D 5E How do you decide which Races to disallow (and/or Classes)?

For species, I'll be OK with anything that does not make me, in and of itself, remake adventures or the campaign. Examples include: - a flying creature, it just changes the game too much and I have to remake almost every outdoor encounter or challenge to account for it. - an evil species, or...

    D&D 5E Actively Evil PCs & a Pirate Sandbox?

Personlly, in the OPs position, I would just make a world without good guys. I like the pirate idea, though I would tinker with it a bit. How about a land where you have evil Aztec style folks on a newly discovered area, the islands around it have evil voodoo people (pacific islander cannibal...
