    AD&D needs a lil' love. Favorite PCs/concepts/race-class combo's...

I really want to have a go at a 1E illusionist (human) in a friend's game. Love that its a somewhat separate class with spells mu's can't generally have. Same with 1E Druid.

    Game design has "moved on"

I naturally can't find the page now. Late night reading. It was Rob Kuntz stating they used the "alternative" combat system from the get-go, and no minis, for playtesting, and the Chainmail references were woo the wargaming crowd. From what I've read over the last few years though, this seems a...

    Game design has "moved on"

only when it tries to be an RPG *ducks* Gygax was, of course, also known for his chess variants. Here is what we have: the basic RPG, D&D, was playtested and really meant to be a mini-less game. Being designed by wargamers, who thought they had to fit into that niche, they wrote it to...

Is the Paladin a subclass or a main class?

If if wears plate mail, swings a claymore, has fighter hp, hit prob, and saving throws, it might be a fighter class.

    Game design has "moved on"

I don't think " moved on" is the right phrase. Not when core reprints are selling, PF is big, and OSR games are popular. RPG design, always in flux, will always develop, and will I think always have OD&D as its base, and actively played. I think it is all a natural, organic cycle. You now...

Shamans and witches? (C&C, but AD&D in general)

Be sure to check Dragonsfoot.org , back issues of their free online magazine have a witch class, complete with separate , non-mu spells.

A solution to the "core books sell" problem?

I am all for WotC making their own games, and not calling them all D&D. 4E in particular should have been called something else. If it were, it would not be in the position of being tossed out in the edition churn, nor causing the shitstorm that it did. It's annoying to see all this development...

Is it possible that 2nd edition could make a very popular come back?

Is true. I think it could be said that D&D is, and has always been, house rules. Arneson started it houseruling Chainmail with his RPG concepts, teamed up with Gary sending versions back and forth. Because the nature of the game is house rules, its edition-ing is infinite, as all these clones...

OSR What Has Caused the OSR Revival?

This is all very interesting, and I enjoy these discussions, but the answer to the thread title is: coffee.

OSR What Has Caused the OSR Revival?

    Subtract AC from THAC0. done.

OSR What Has Caused the OSR Revival?

Not at all, working out one's own system is what "everybody" did. And it never ends.... as for AC, I'll have to come clean here. I can do basic arithmetic. I worked as a cashier with no calculator or register to count for me. Indeed by far the easiest method, almost automatic, is to add back to...

Fighters vs. Spellcasters (a case for fighters.)

i imagine its the same player who doesn't shower and constantly rules-lawyers. Just a traumatic memory here. As for elves, I just roll discretely or in advance.

Fighters vs. Spellcasters (a case for fighters.)

The example given was the player walking within 5' of every single wall to force a passive check. Thats annoying. Its not about elf abilities. This kind of player, if they exist, would only ruin the game for everyone else.

Fighters vs. Spellcasters (a case for fighters.)

you missed the point - not the rule that is abusive, but a player being a tool

OSR What Has Caused the OSR Revival?

isn't first class better than second or third? I realize some folks didn't grok AC, but never saw anyone struggle with it, or heard of it as counter-intuitive, until 3E. Some of that had to have been marketing. When I DM now, I use descending AC, but throw out the ascending numbers also...

OSR What Has Caused the OSR Revival?

While even Gary said he "goofed" with AC's into negative numbers, nobody found it, or THAC0, confusing until 3E said it was : )

Pathfinder 1E I get the feeling Paizo isn't worried about Wizards of the Coast.

I don't see how a 3.75 would expose them as wrong any differently than 5E, nor have they burned any bridges. Indeed the reprints show a move away from slash-and-burn. 5E doing well brings people into FLGS, increases interest in the hobby, and I think everybody sees a bump. More players is good...

Pathfinder 1E I get the feeling Paizo isn't worried about Wizards of the Coast.

Corporations aren't people. WotC wasn't cocky, PF isn't confident, etc. I think the days of one edition's prominence is long over, and 5E doing well is good for Paizo, and PF doing well is good for WotC. If Wizards were doing a 3.75, with the intent of wiping Paizo out, that would be...

D&D 5E What rules would you like to see come back in 5E?

True, and very easy to grandfather in, creating scenes akin to Legolas and Gimli's counting game with the Orcs. It would be unwieldy at high levels, though, where I think something more akin to Chainmail's 20:1 or 10:1 rules would work better. On the topic of encouraging cooperative play -...
