I've found the basis for 4e-style fantasy words

The game itself increased the reading levels, but did not require it to play, either via osmosis, or one of the Basic boxes that quickly segued into AD&D. No doubt, there is some foolishness in those tomes - paragraphs that to this day generate a "huh?" Gygax resides on no pedestal to me...

D&D 5E Should Next have been something completely new and made from scratch?

D&D Next can also get off my lawn. And pull up its pants.

D&D 5E What rules would you like to see come back in 5E?

An obscure rule, but allowing fighters one attack per level vs. creatures of 1HD or less is pretty cool.

I've found the basis for 4e-style fantasy words

1E players had a higher reading level than their peers. This be fact. Don't ask for a link, I proved it in the 5th grade. A higher reading level is a good thing.

OSR What Has Caused the OSR Revival?

Off a tangent from ^ I believe it was found that "hobbit" actually does predate Tolkien in folklore, but no one AFAIK has dared challenge it

OSR What Has Caused the OSR Revival?

I agree it is mainly just unmet demand. I know several DM's who never even switched to 2E, and are still running their games dating to the 70's and 80's. Same with PF really. but, I disagree on the nostalgia. People don't play B/X , or AD&D, or even PF, out of nostalgia. They play those...

D&D 5E What are the things in D&D Next you don't like?

Oh for christ sake. Yeah, add that to my list too. Healing surges. I've got one in my pants. I've yet to see a 5E specific rule I like. Maybe cantrips at will, IF they were actually cantrips.

D&D 5E Opinion poll: Once D&D Next is out, how do you think it will do? (based on what we have so far)

Ah, I see. It's impossible to really know without the numbers. I think overall, we know it to be a decline from 1E to now. Support of all the games looks to be a hopeful future however -

D&D 5E What rules would you like to see come back in 5E?

you need shovel, in case you hadn't noticed. Reduction of paperwork? While adding tons of rules? Generalizations about what players and DMs like according to what, interweb polls? Nope, sorry. There are many abandoned rules by the original authors that play well and are great fun reg rdless...

D&D 5E Opinion poll: Once D&D Next is out, how do you think it will do? (based on what we have so far)

I think you are partly right, but why you put splitting the audience in quotes suggests you don't believe its happened, over and over. Were the audience not split, we would have no OSR, and PF would be virtually unknown. So although you are right, I think, that D&D will continue to...

D&D 5E What rules would you like to see come back in 5E?

And the thought that it would somehow be hard to implement is to me quite silly in the face of endless rules additions over the years. It's extremely easy: your spell has a casting time, if you happen to get hit mid spell, you lose it.

What 1E/2E spell does this matter with?

    Gaming Clubs & Community

This thread is for talking about your gaming community, IRL. I have been reconnecting with the community near me, which I grew up with. In my hometown of Schenectady, NY, a wargamer's club has existed for a long time. Known as the SWA, this club supports tabletop games of all kinds. For...

    Favorite D&D books

1E DMG - an almost mythical tome in its own right, it is pure gold to me. Not that I use every rule : ) Style matters. Gary had it in spades. Also the RIFTS core book - a truly refreshing gonzo blast after years of AD&D.

Mari Kolkowsky (D&D Art Director) got laid off yesterday

I apologize for my confusion - the portfolio of final renders alone, to an outsider, leaves more questions than answers, and absent of understanding industry terminology, a "portfolio of my stuff" has narrower meaning. Then, you have "case studies", which is actually pretty funny from my pov...

    What is your favorite dragon

By narrow margin, Blues. Truly the coolest of dragonkind. Best camouflaged dragon in the skies. And they breathe goddamned lightning, IMO the only breath weapon as awesome as fire.

D&D 5E What rules would you like to see come back in 5E?

Not so much, but crit tables were very common in early days way before 2E. They are fun, but they do run characters through a meat grinder. As adolescents we loved our crits and fumbles. Warhammer fumble, dwarf hits paladin's groin...still funny to this day...

Mari Kolkowsky (D&D Art Director) got laid off yesterday

I have no connection to your field, I work in developmental disability, and write music. I do think some final work ought be there, and artists certainly appreciate exposure - my reaction though was also along the lines of wondering what the team(s) were for various projects, and just a...

D&D 5E What rules would you like to see come back in 5E?

I would love to see casting times, and weapon vs. armor type. The casting times put a reasonable check vs. the much-complained about m-u supremacy, and weapon vs. armor because, done right, is easy and completely awesome for fighters. Maces and warhammers ( which DO include the lucern hammer )...

Mari Kolkowsky (D&D Art Director) got laid off yesterday

it is, though I think if you are an art director, you really should say more about what you did on each project. Presenting an artist's portfolio seems almost disingenuous.
