The Odyssey System -- Stripped-down Hot Rod d20 rules

What was behind the decision to divorce perception tasks from Wisdom and to make them their own Ability score?

    Supers20 Q&A

Are you going to peg Supers20 to a specific comic book era, or are you going to try to make it as era-neutral as possible? What would be the advantage of this system over one like Mutants & Masterminds?

    Are your players risk takers?

Not quite, but I might have been unclear. I was describing a point of view another poster (Philotomy Jurament) was actually good enough to explain to me some time ago. A character-as-an-avatar viewpoint means that your character is "your guy", just like the thimble might be "your guy" in...

    I Dislike...

    3e, 4e, they're both fine choices. We'll see which I prefer after I get to try 4e.

    Are your players risk takers?

Good analysis. If you see your PC as nothing more than your vehicle for exploring the adventure, then you're more likely to avoid background interests or relationships than you are if you see your PC as a character in the narrative (which I tend to do). This is also something which the rules of...

    Are your players risk takers?

A lot of it comes from "upbringing", so to speak. If you get a player who spends most of his game-time seeing his character thrown through meat-grinders, where you have to check every 5-foot square and every chest and every statue and every switch with a 10-foot pole or your character is going...

    Ricky Bobby Endorses 4th Edition!

"Hi, I'm Ricky Bobby, and I'm a Dwarven Fighter. Not the lil' midget guys who try to sneak around by standing on each other's shoulders in a trench coat, but like a little beardy guy with an axe and a helmet with horns who drinks booze and kills things and takes their stuff. It's a real...

    True 20 for fantasy

True20 is my preferred system for lighter fantasy games at this point. I'd prefer it to be a little more like M&M in terms of character creation (I feel like the powers are more closed in True20), but it works well and it's easy to shake out for a game.

Why I think D&D is losing market share...

Digg it, rating system, etc. WotC needs to make sure that the DDI has its own, internal system for comments and ratings of particular DM's adventures or possibly even sessions. They need a part of their community where players can talk about the awesome adventure they just had at so-and-so's...

Why I think D&D is losing market share...

If WotC is smart, the RPGA and Gleemax can and should collaborate so that when people stark poking around Gleemax, they find hundreds of tables with open seats and DMs asking if they want to try out the new 4e rules in this adventure or that adventure. They should establish right from the get-go...

Why I think D&D is losing market share...

The issue has already been identified: a D&D game involves interaction between several people who have school, jobs, lives, family, friends, television, and other entertainment all competing for their time. I've read and been astounded by tales of gamers trekking 200+ miles for a game of D&D...

Gridless combats - How do you do it?

While I generally like to have some kind of map (even just one sketched on paper or on a dry-erase board), I've been playing online in a chat game for about two years now, and one of the tricks I can tell you is to clarify for players at the start of each of their turns what the battlefield...

Okay, where do you stand on diagonal movement?

I've played on hexes. I've played on grids both ways. I've played wargames with tape measures. I don't care. Just make it fun.

How often do you use traps?

10% if that. Probably closer to zero. Dungeon crawls bore me to death if used without very good reason, especially when the players think they need to play like Gygaxian expert dungeoneers to succeed. I'll occasionally have a trap or two strewn about, but more often than not, I like to use traps...

    Armor in RPG's

Since I've been playing Mutants & Masterminds lately, I really have come to prefer armor adding to your toughness, not adding to your defense. Armor makes you harder to hurt, not harder to hit.

Tell me your tale about the Tomb of Horrors

Tomb of Horrors annoyed me to no end. What a waste of an afternoon. The instant-death room in particular... ugh. I lost my first character to that because I wanted to search the door frame for traps after we opened the door, and the DM decided that it meant I was in the room enough to die. I...

When does D&D stop becoming D&D?

What really is the essence of D&D? Star Trek aliens approach to races- Elves are humans with pointy ears. Halflings are short humans. Dwarves are stout and tough humans. Orcs are brutish strong humans. It’s not a cantina filled with bizarre morphologies or strangeness. That’s for later...

4E or 3.5 or something else - what's in your future?

I'll be picking up 4e, and it may or may not replace 3.Xe for me, depending on where I'm gaming on any given day. However, my main game of choice is likely going to remain either Mutants & Masterminds (or my own system, d20 Advanced), if only because I love the flexibility and the group I'm in...

If you could buy advance copies of the core books now, how much would you pay?

Nothing higher than the price I got on Amazon. I don't need the books early: I've got an M&M game to keep me happy until I can mess around with 4e over the summer (when I've actually got time to devote to it).

Laptops at the Gaming table: worth it?

When I ran games with my face-to-face group, I used my laptop as my "GM Screen" for the most part, since I have a lot of .pdfs of books and have gotten pretty quick at using search functions to locate problematic rules quickly. I also tend to be more organized with my files on my computer than I...
