Why are D&D discussions so angry?

I have seen some examples of threads getting out of hand, and examples of passive aggressiveness on the boards. However, I find most threads to be fairly civil. (Mind you, I do agree with reporting offensive posts.) One thing that I find beneficial is to consider that my views are based on my...

Do You Use Your RPG Rules as Written?

Generally, I do use rules as written. However, I am a strong believer in Rule 0 and that a GM has a right to say no to allowing certain things in a campaign. (For example, if I believe that a class or prestige class is inappropriate for a setting, I will say no to it. Similarly, I may alter...

Do RPGs' Wargaming Aspects Overshadow RPing?

I have had many game sessions where there were no dice ever rollled. I think that individual groups can differ widely in this area, but that role playing has been a large part of the games that I have been in during the past 26 years.

    Chicago Gameday XIV: Aftermath...

I know that a new D&D Meetup Group in Chicago started a few months back. It might be a good idea to let them know about the Gameday.

    Is D&D Your Favorite RPG?

I voted yes, as the rules have much to recommend despite some flaws. For those who want more realistic rules, there are some optional rules to make it hard for people to survive serious damage. or to make things better fit their vision of a game. However, I think the D&D rules can model...

Liv.Greyhawk: Sharks and Sahuagin in NYR DYV!!??!?!??

Also, considering the role of magic on Oerth, it could be there are some gates from the Nyr Dyv to the Ocean. The fabled Islands of Woe were in the Nyr Dyv. Possibly an enterprising band of sahuaghin were able to find an old gate in one of Oerth's oceans and gain access to the Nyr Dyv...

    Chicago Gameday XIV: Aftermath...

Buzz, sign me up for Slot 0, Breakfast. Also sign me up for Slot 1, Game 6: Beyond the Veil and Slot 2, Game 4: The Iron Heroes vs. White Plume Mountain. Also, my offer from the planning thread still stands. If we have any sudden cancellations, I am willing to step up to run something. (I...

Chicago Gameday XIV Planning Thread: June 17th

Well, if we do have any cancellations, we seem to be in good shape for back up games. Perhaps we should see if there is anyone willing to run a 7th afternoon slot, as we seem to have more people in the afternoon than in the morning. Also, when should we start a sign up thread?

Chicago Gameday XIV Planning Thread: June 17th

Buzz, while I can't create a new event for the Gameday, being swamped with school work and a few other things, I can be a backup GM if needed. (I can run a previous event in case we have any last minute cancellations.)

I heard about this when I picked up a Sprite bottle However, being a compassionate person, I let the poor sprite out of the bottle.

The Official "Thanks Spoony Bard/Pooka" Thread!

Thank you, Spoony Bard. Thank you, Twin Rose. I think that the true measure of a person is often found in how they respond to a crisis. So, your dedication and hard work have shone through. Thanks again.

Player Character vs Player Character fight ends in death...

From what I have seen, vendetta begets vendetta. So, I hope that the group can have player characters who cooperate with each other. A DM could easily have NPC opponents who are aware of the animosity of two PCs exploit the situation to the harm of the party. (It was not necessary to do this...

    Hanukkah D&D Campaign

Actually, combining Testament and Toon might work for Purim. This way, you could drop an anvil on Haman and have him co me out no worse for wear than Wile E. Coyote. :D

    Pastoralists vs Agrarians vs Nomads

One must also recall that the Spaniards were able to get several peoples subject to the Aztecs to join in their efforts to oppose the Aztecs. See Spanish Conquest in the History of Mexico article at Wikipedia. Still, I think agrarian societies would have an advantage in producing larger number...

Gwendilyn, 7th level character (title change)

True Strike is a good one to cast and use for the first attack. I think flaws are generally not worth it for PC adventurers. Also, remember that a sorceror or wizard's familiar can deliver touch attack spells and create flanking bonuses.

Comments and questions on 3.5 from a Newbie

Well, I think one thing to consider is how a character can work with ther rest of a party. I made a few comments on the Gwendilyn thread in the Rules forum. Perhaps one thing to remember is that characters will have different roles in a group. So, some degree of focus is important. Also...

Gwendilyn, 7th level character (title change)

I generally agree with this statement: Based on monboesen's latest design of Gwendilyn, we seem to have someone who is indeed a decent mobile defensive fighter and a second rate arcane caster. She could spend much of her time in a combat tying up her enemies, and creating opportunities for...

(total frustration) There MUST be an Extra Feats Academy around somewhere here ...

It is slightly confusing, but I have run events with Core Rules and AU characters and they have worked well together. No character will be ideal under all conditions. This is why the game assumes a party of adventurers. Mind you it is still possible to work with groups of different sizes or...

    Hanukkah D&D Campaign

I believe you are referring to the controversy between Rabbi Shammai and Rabbi Hillel. They are known for disagreeing and debating, much like our EN World board members. However, Hillel insisted that his students study Shammai's teachings as they too contained an element of truth. (Hillel...
