    specialties specialties

I dont object to your house rule idea. On the other hand, I frankly don't see the problem with things as they are. El and Mer seem like perfectly delightful characters with very interesting reasons for avoiding certain types of spells.

    Bard Boosting?

New uses for Bardic Music. New music magic!! (Note, I made it a rule that the bard must have both the requisite ranks in perform AND the requisite class level to use these abilities--but that's a different issue.) Level one, Inspire Courage & Inspire Competence (see feat descriptions)...

    Need help awarding roleplaying EXP

Lets face it ... XP is pretty much completely at the DM's discretion. So let's just give up any illusion that character advancement follows some kind of absolute laws embedded in the fiber of the cosmos. What I do ... First of all, I give the same XP to all players. The reason for that is...

    RL Mythical creatures critter book

Yes, it should contain some retelling, so that we don't end up with just the creatures with no contextualization. Ideally, each creature should have a setting or other props described as well. And, each should have a description of its individual background, attitudes, behaviors, etc. In...

    Failed Tracking checks

What happens when you fail a Wilderness Lore check to track a foe? Does it become impossible to follow them from that point on, and you have to turn around and go home? Or do you get to retry and possibly continue tracking, though with a loss of time?

    Free Actions question...When?

The six-second round is an artificial contrivance to make gaming work in a simple way. Time does not ACTUALLY stop for your character when it is not his turn--of course. It's just that we need to keep track of actions by going in sequence rather than by trying to imagine everything happening...

    Free Actions question...When?

Nice try! There is no exception for speaking. Just because we all do it doesnt mean it is an exception in the rules. Technically, speaking in character is something that you can only do on your turn.

How to enforce low magic item count

Special purpose INTELLIGENT items! A special purpose could be something to the effect that it exists solely to serve its creator ... or, only to destroy humans. Also, as has been mentioned, give the items an alignment, which limits who can use it. And ... you can have an item with "drawbacks"...

    Barbarian in making...need some info

CON also determines how long you can rage, as I recall ... But if I were you, I'd put my second highest stat in DEX. And then I'd take the Extended Rage feat, which more than compensates for having a slightly lower CON. Now here's a wacky idea: are you sure you need to have STR be the...

POLL - What is the general alignment of elves?

I'd like to stick up for the idea that chaotic can mean anti-social. I agree, at least in part. Actually, asocial might be more appropriate. To be chaotic means to have a somewhat lower value placed upon the coherence of the group and its social structure. You could call that asocial, as...

    Alignment Traits

I don't recall offering a definition of selfishness. I merely presented examples of the kind of neutral behavior that might be called selfish. You seem to have the assumption that Neutrality is what most people are. That MIGHT be true, but I'm not sure. In any case, I think the assumption...

    Alignment Traits

Evil: burns down the homes of innocent people Good: actively tries to put out the fire Neutral: reports the identity of the arsonist, for a reward Evil: steals whenever the opportunity arises Good: takes from villains, for a good cause Neutral: steals from the wealthy, but not from the...

    Alignment Traits

This is unsound, IMHO. Since when is it evil to be cowardly? Can't a good character be suspicious? Can't an evil character be brave? Can't a lawful character be proud? These formulations miss more often than they hit.

    Alignment Traits

Selfish is not an evil trait. The way you describe selfishness sounds like a neutral attitude. Your definition describes someone who is detached from others--but not even completely detached, since he still enjoys them. To say that the welfare of others "matters little to you" does not even...

    Tapped out...need help

I had a lot of fun playing a human barbarian with PTSD. (Post-traumatic stress disorder). When he encountered a combat situation, he would sometimes rage and sometimes flee---completely unpredictable. Usually after combat he would sob uncontrollably for several minutes. He would often fixate...

    Chicago

Okay, I have to ask ... Has anyone had any luck connecting with other players through this thread? I'm wondering how it can be so difficult to find other gamers in a city like Chicago. What's with that?! When I used to live in New Jersey, it was really easy to find other players. But I...

    Followers vs. Henchmen

Huge difference! Hirelings could turn out to be thieves or backstabbers. Also, with hirelings, the more danger you encounter, the more they will want to get paid. But with followers, the more danger you encounter and survive, the more they will admire you and trust you to get them safely...

Relics and Rituals 2!!! I GOT IT!!! (More)

I'm glad to know that there is some good stuff about Alchemy and Astrology, two potentially good skills. I guess I'll have to consider buying another book. I'd like to hear more about this Master Astrologer Pr class. I thought R&RI was okay. Good spells, and I was very intrigued by the...
