Ok! So do you play 5e and what specifically did you add or tweak to enforce a TWFer to have his hands occupied? Say for example that your TWFer wants to retrieve and quaff a potion, or pick up and pocket an object from the floor, then go back to TWFing. What do you rule to make it impaired...

It's a very good point. Although Dragons probably would not be confusing if they were all together. Maybe they never agreed on what is the purpose of the MM: to provide a reference during the game or to present options for adventure design and worldbuilding? Without a clearly defined purpose...

Thanks for your insights, most of which aligns with what I think myself. But you could have just answered that you don’t use the sort of codified rules I am asking about. I want to hear from those who do, in order to understand how it works for them.

No, and I am not asking for suggestions. I am asking if someone does use some sort of rules for this, in which case they are welcome to tell what they are actually using.

That doesn't directly answer my question, but I get that you are playing 5e? So, in the context of 5e for you, are you using the 5e rules for how you use objects in your hands during combat strictly as-written, or are you using them only roughly/approximately?

This is not a subject limited to the current D&D edition. Every now and then I ask myself how the game would change if I introduced a more rigid "hands slot economy" (please feel free to suggest a better name) by which every character has strict rules on what they can hold or how they can use...

I do tell my players, and I have many reasons to do so! 1) Some players might have played it already with another group, or even DM it. Which could even mean that they would rather not want to play it again. 2) They might want to avoid casually reading information about the adventure ahead...

The whole idea sounds very cool. I don't know if I personally would be able to pull it off in a satisfying way... I would probably worry all the time that I am not making the lich smart enough, and keep adding a backup plan to a backup plan until the lich is effectively unbeatable.

These are all excellent concepts! Another possible non-magical but still fantasy-like power source is actually burden animals. Maybe a couple of enslaved giant creatures can pull the subway. That of course will carry the complications of possible moral judgment over those who chose to operate...
