D&D 4E How have PCs died in your 4e games?

Hey Dr Ruminahui, To me having the party know they are can die and that you aren't scared to kill them if you think it's appropriate is more important than achieving a kill! Hopefully some of the other PCs were scared too. So good work!

D&D 4E How have PCs died in your 4e games?

LOL! Restrictive terrain, superior cover for the monsterz. One elite soldier/skirmisher per meleeist to hold them back. Make the rest artillery minions and focus-fire the controller, then the leader, then the striker, then... LMAO! ;) Edit: OK, not necessarily a TPK but it can be tough :D

D&D 4E How have PCs died in your 4e games?

I don't wanna get into the details. But last time it all started with one of the players saying... "I know. Let's split up..." LMAO!

Warped cousins of Gnomes, twisted by Fomorian magic?

Yeah mate, it is. I like what they look like and their powers and how I RP them :D

    New DM questions

Don't get me wrong. The final encounter is tough but survivable for a new group of experienced players... Then again I pull every trick in the bag out when playing dragons. In my campaigns they are the ultimate monster and not something to be messed with. So you rarely encounter a dragon that...

Warped cousins of Gnomes, twisted by Fomorian magic?

I almost went for "Several of the above". And if I was in a more technically correct mood I would have. However, it's Friday afternoon at work and I'm half tanked... And spriggans make me laugh! So Spriggans it is!

What do you mean you give random XP? Bad man. Bad man!

Why thank you :) Getting told I have to spread XP around before giving this person more XP has just made me go looking for more low-level posters to reward :D I trawl threads that capture my interest looking for low level posters I can give XP. Sometimes I just comment "Random XP for you" or...

Battles taking too long - whats the tricks?

Transparency has it's place but I think it's starting to get overrated. I think there needs to be a balance.

What do you mean you give random XP? Bad man. Bad man!

Well I don't think I've ever gotten XP from folks over level 2... Well not before this thread anyway. So where is my example? Yes examples help but ultimately the helpfulness of a post maybe isn't driving XP as much as how much the reader likes the post and the poster. Still that's content...

    New DM questions

Cool! Next campaign start I'll run three +2 encounters with time pressure and then a +3 with front-line soldiers, terrain favouring the bad guys, a lot of atrillery minions and controllers focus-firing the PC controller, then striker, then ... Doesn't matter if they players are new to the game...

    XP spreading...

I mostly go around giving out XP randomly to folks just because they are low level and have posted... But I don't advertise the "low level" bit ;)

What do you mean you give random XP? Bad man. Bad man!

BBSs mostly, with some IRC channels. Hacking and certain coding... I was always out on the fringes :) Those were the days when things like that weren't illegal and we were really just exploring what was out there. A lot of time on early IRC and "IRC wars" (DOS attacks). Ah memorys... Good times...

    New DM questions

I guess the difference is how you are going to use it. As a campaign starter you probably don't want to kill all the PCs. As a one-shot on the other hand... Hey stretch your tactical wings and show the player's what the game can do!

What do you mean you give random XP? Bad man. Bad man!

First of the subject is joking at myself and the situation :) For quite some time now I've been randomly giving XP out to posts. Pariticularly to low level posters. This is not some scheme to net myself a stack of extra XP! As a long-time forum admin (20+ years) one of the things that bugs me...

    New DM questions

Urm... Part of the problem with Kobold Hall is each encounter is tougher than the last. So for a new group... Well that last one has a really good chance of killing off the whole party. Yeah it has a reputation for TPK :) Finding another sandpit might be a good idea. Or maybe turn the final...

    Monster Slayers/Heroes of Hesiod

Ran this with my son (7yo) and daughter (11yo). My wife sat in and my daughter ran two of the characters. My son has a very short attention span and he couldn't get enough of ti so it's pretty well tailored to the younger end of it's target age group. Now they want more! Awesome!

    D&D 3E/3.5 Helping a Former 3.5 Player Get 4e

When I was starting out DMing 4e I found it very useful to dry run the first few combats. I got their character sheets and ran through the first couple of combats without them to make sure I understood it all properly and wasn't missing anything. I found it useful but YMMV.

    Elven Bow "Paradox"

As a long-time self-bowyer I can tell you that it's very easy to make a bow without cutting the tree down. I've done it a number of times. More times than I have actually cut an entire tree down. It's simply easier, more efficient and does less damage (the latter's a moot point in primitive...

New player and even newer DM struggling with another player...

Running an evil game is one thing. Introducing evil PCs into a non-evil party is quite another. If everyone is RPing properly the latter will split the group permanently and the good PCs would likely become the sworn enemies of the evil ones. On top of that you have little brother who doesn't...
