D&D 5E Variable XP values for monsters CR 21+

Sorry Quickleaf I haven't really looked into this deeply yet. TBH I have been on hiatus from analysis for a number of reasons, not the least being I thought noone was interested (with the DMg coming out and all). I'm about to dive in again - hey it turns out folks still are interested! Maybe I...

*stretch* Oh lookie... I remember this. I wonder if there's anything worth looking at in 5e, maths-wise, now???

    D&D 5E Surf's D&D 5e Monster Analysis

Aaww... Thanks for the kind words! So many directions I could go with this now. But I think I'm going to finish the monster manual analysis in conjunction with the DMG and then try to come up with a more accurate method than the DMG!

Thanks for the comparison Quickleaf !

    D&D 5E CR to Level calculation ?

You called? Lol Early feedback is that the two systems end up in the same ballpark. That said I'd love to see a few hundred monsters run through both and then assess how they compare... Hhhmmm... That sounds like an interestign project! Definately!

    D&D 5E Surf's D&D 5e Monster Analysis

Cool! I look forward to seeing the results! Interesting monster! Some of his attributes look a bit difficult to quantify without careful consideration, but you should have a very good handle on how he works since you designed him! Below I've assumed that all of you base numbers are correct...

    D&D 5E Surf's D&D 5e Monster Analysis

It was a slippery little sucker to nail but Part 10: Construction: Evaluating CR is now up! Wonder how it will compare to the DMG? Oh well all I can do now is wait for my DMG to arrive!

Ah! Reddit, not Twitter. I see how I missed it :-D TY!

    D&D 5E I have the DMG!

Huh. I missed that one. It's not too different from the method I am using. Still interested to see or read about what's in the actual DMG, of course :-P

    D&D 5E I have the DMG!

So does either the Monster Creation or NPC Creation section provide a mathematical basis for assessing CR??

D&D 5E Monster Math: CR1 vs CR½ - Quantifying the differences

It's spells are primarily defensive and it's traits also boost defense. It doesn't have spike damage capable of taking down a single level 1 PC in one hit. It doesn't get significant Advantage on attack either. I peg it as towards the upper end of CR1.

D&D 5E Monster Math: CR1 vs CR½ - Quantifying the differences

Agreed. OK so it's like MM tweeted at the end of August, CR is about defensive (ac,hp,etc) and offensive (damage,to-hit,etc) capability. But how do you break down both aspects? Using statistical indexing you have additive pools and adjustors. In D&D we do this kind of thing in DPR calculations...

D&D 5E Monster Math: CR1 vs CR½ - Quantifying the differences

In the end I had modified a couple of constants that needed retuning. There's now clear separation, with 3 instances of overlap at index 27. The Thug is at 27, with the Quasit and Sildar Hallwinter. That's not an issue at this stage and a little more tuning might resolve them. Or not. There's...

D&D 5E Monster Math: CR1 vs CR½ - Quantifying the differences

Sure and I agree with your ranking. I'm also happy to consider Amorphous trivial. Now if I can find some compelling reason to dock the Shadow some freaking HP... lol. With that and the "removed from play" multiplier tweaked the vast majority of CR1 and CR½ monsters are separated. There are only...

D&D 5E Monster Math: CR1 vs CR½ - Quantifying the differences

Thanks again for your response ccooke ! No you didn't. There's no such thing in this thread! Well... I probably won't get bogged down in 4e-style DPR calculations. But the level of math you posted is perfectly fine ;-) A while ago (pre-PHB release) on a WotC community thread a number of us...

D&D 5E Monster Math: CR1 vs CR½ - Quantifying the differences

OK so I'd assessed all the offensive capabilities correctly but had scaled up the significance of resistances at level 1. The problem with that becomes the Shadow, of course. The main difference in practice between the Shadow and the Imp/Quasit is that the Shadow doesn't have a remove-from-play...
