D&D 5E Monster Math: CR1 vs CR½ - Quantifying the differences

Thanks ccooke everything you are saying about the Imp and Quasit makes pretty good sense, on the surface. Now let's see how I go about enumerating it all, lol. Yes, I'm aware of some of the situational issues between CR½ and CR1 :-) Sometimes it's just properly understanding and then...

D&D 5E Monster Math: CR1 vs CR½ - Quantifying the differences

OK I noticed I'd copy-pasted some of the NADs from the various sources instead of actually calculating them. I'll update post #1 now. Between that, factoring in advantage/disadvantage percent and separating out things like resistance much of CR1 vs CR½ has clarified. But no matter how I turn...

D&D 5E Monster Math: CR1 vs CR½ - Quantifying the differences

OK good. I'll add the Scout shortly. The high Stealth/Perception suggests they are designed for ambush attacks and if they focus-fire a single PC in the surprise round (and most of the PCs will likely be surprised) they could easily 0 or kill one PC outright. Ah! So there's a synergy with the...

Also in Basic DM v0.1, which is where I got it from. Damned fat fingers! I will correct this in post #1! Thank you peoples!

    D&D 5E Surf's D&D 5e Monster Analysis

Well the CR evaluation process is a little tougher to crack than expected. I talk about why in this thread and who knows... Maybe you can help??

D&D 5E Monster Math: CR1 vs CR½ - Quantifying the differences

Monster Math: CR1 vs CR½ - Quantifying the differences So for the next article in my analysis series I am working on a CR evaluation method. It's a pretty flexible model and aims to produce results in the neighbourhood of +/-5% of traditional deeper monster analysis and evaluation methods...

D&D 5E Are Challenge Ratings of dragons accurate in 5ED&D?

The vote choices aren't quite broad enough :-) My approaching-finished CR assessment method currently shows over 92% accuracy in assessment for monsters of CR1 or higher. That includes the 7 dragons available before the Monster Manual. About half of these are at the top of their CR or slightly...

D&D 5E Help me peg the CR for this villain

There's a convention for Spellcasting tho and honestly it is clearer than hiding the slots away in the description. Then again I guess you are the only one using this critter so it's sort of a moot point...

D&D 5E Help me peg the CR for this villain

Convention is to show these in braces after the spell level, not by putting the unclear "...he has 3 spell slots..." in the Spellcasting description. I've not seen Spellcasting outlined this way yet. I'd suggest removing that part from the description and updating the spell list to the standard...

D&D 5E Help me peg the CR for this villain

My critique... Average attribute is a bit too high. Max attribute is slightly high, but OK. HP are slightly low for a CR8. Damage is slightly high for a CR8 - I'm assuming it'll attack thrice with Pact Blade. HP and Damage alone balance out to a high-CR8 or low-CR9 monster. I left the...

D&D 5E Issues with the "NPCs" in the MM and HotDQ (SPOILERS!)

Yep. It's also about HP and Damage output... Well properly CR is about a monster's total Defense and Offense combined. CR is what aligns a monster with PC "level". IMHO it would have been best to use Level 30 instead of CR30, but that ship has sailed.

LMAO! Yeah I know exactly what you mean. I don't know if I'll get to it or not... But I do keep a list of article suggestions and this is on it (I'll give it a +1 as a result of your suggestion).

    D&D 5E Surf's D&D 5e Monster Analysis

Glad you enjoyed it! Quick spell damage evaluation... Cone Of Cold (L5) = 135 Ice Storm (L4) = 86.25 Fireball (L4) = 118.125 Fireball (L3) = 105 If I was running the Mage against a L6 group of 4 PCs they'd have an average of 196 Hit Points. I wouldn't use Ice Storm unless the other...

    D&D 5E Surf's D&D 5e Monster Analysis

I haven't done any formal analysis on this yet, but I have looked at it in passing. Right now I think that it's effectively a flip-side to damage, that PCs with healing spells/powers can spend those to do approximately the same healing as an equivalent resource would in damage. So if a level 3...

    D&D 5E [5e Monster] Mushropod--composting at its best

It's an ambush creature. It goes something like this... Wait until entire party is in range. Get surprise round. Make 2 attacks per PC, latching onto most of the weaker PCs with two tentacles for 12 damage. One of the weaker PCs breaks free, the other doesn't. The other two PCs...

    D&D 5E 5E Maths

With oddball creatures like that it gets tricky, for sure and a nasty DM can do some terrible things with such creatures. CR seems to have it's biggest emphasis on Damage, then HP with AC and Attack bonus being fine-tuners. The Intellect Devourer has 21HP and that clearly labels it as a...
